“I vote MGM,” Chase said. “I want to walk the yellow brick road.”

“Guys—”

“This isn’t a vacation,” Killian groused. “We’re going to get Logan and her stuff and get her home.”

“It’ll be nice to have her home,” Mom said. “Honey, make a list of the meals you want me to cook while you’re here.”

“HEY!” I yelled. “EVERYONE STOP. I’m not moving home. I’m moving to Waco. I’m already in a moving truck, and I’m about six hours away.”

“You can’t move to Waco,” Chase said. “What about your job?”

“I’m working remote. My boss went through a nasty divorce a few years ago. I called expecting to quit, but she understood my situation so it’s all good.”

“How will that even work?” Killian demanded.

I took a deep breath. “Look, I appreciate that you’re trying to help, but I’ve got this. Really, I’ve got this sorted.”

“You’re driving to Waco yourself? I don’t want you staying in those cheap motels by the highway alone,” Mom said.

“I’m fine,” I said. “Tavy’s father came to help her pack up her apartment. She had to fly to Waco last minute because her job needed her to start sooner, so I’m riding shotgun. Everything’s fine. When I get to Waco, I’ll be crashing with Tavy while I figure out some stuff. Okay?”

The line was silent.

“Okay?” I pressed.

“Okay,” Grady replied.

“Can I still fly to Vegas and punch Knox in the face?” Harlan inquired.

“I’d prefer if you didn’t,” I said. “Anyway, I took care of it.”

“Took care of what?” Killian asked.

“Never mind,” I said quickly.

“Logan, what did you do?” Chase asked.

“I might’ve poured concrete down his pipes, and it’s possible that I keyed his sports car.”

Harlan let out a howl of laughter. “’Atta girl! I taught you well.”

“Good going, Rug Rat,” Grady said, a chuckle escaping his lips.

“I picked up a few tricks.” A smile bloomed across my face. “I love you guys. I really do.”

“You’ll keep in touch,” Mom said. “Check in more.”

“I will,” I promised.

My brothers all said goodbye, but my dad still hadn’t spoken.

“Dad?” I pressed.

“You really okay, LoLo?”

Something in his tone made tears prick my eyes. Smoke was walking out of the gas station, holding a plastic bag.

I remembered how we had fallen asleep together, his body cradling mine. I remembered him holding my hand when I told Knox never to call me again.
