“I mean, I have an itch that needs scratching. Like bad.”

“I still think steering clear of them is a good idea.”

She leaned forward and dropped her voice. “But I just know they’d be good in bed.”

“How do you know?”

“Well, they’re at least a decade older than me. Experience. I need an experienced man in my life.”

“Then why were you warning them about flirting with me?” I demanded. “Shouldn’t you be sharing the wealth?”

“You’re going to need to rebound with someone sooner or later,” she said. “I don’t want it to be with one of them. It would also make things very complicated for you.”

“Complicated for me how?”

“You need someone you’ll never see again. Not one of my dad’s biker brothers who you’ll be forced to see again out of general proximity to me and the club. Make sense?”

“I guess.” I frowned.

The clomp of heavy boots up the porch stairs alerted us that we were no longer alone. Smoke came in with his duffel and dropped it on the ground.

“Have they been treating you well, Tav?” Smoke asked, setting his hand on his daughter’s shoulder and giving it a squeeze.

“Yep.” She nodded. “Bones has been giving me rides in the morning to work. And Kelp has been giving me rides home.”

“Good. And the job?”

“Job is good.” She shrugged. “I’m ready to crash though. I’ve been up since five.”

Smoke dropped his hand and Tavy stood up and came to me. “I wanted to stay up until you got here. Now you’re here, so I’m going to bed. Dad’ll take you to your room.”

I made a move to get up from my chair, but Tavy waved me down and looped an arm around my shoulders. “I don’t know if I’ll see you tomorrow before I go to work. I have to leave at six.”

“Yeah, maybe I’ll catch you in the afternoon when you’re done,” I said with a grin.

“And then we can drive over and check out our new apartment.”

“Have you seen it yet?”

“Nope. I was waiting for you.” She kissed her hand and then touched the top of my head. “Sleep well, everyone.”

“Night, Tav,” Kelp called out.

She gave a little finger wave to him and then headed down the hallway toward the stairs.

Smoke took Tavy’s vacant seat, his eyes on me while I bit into the burrito. My brow furrowed.

“What’s wrong?” Smoke asked. He held his hand out to Raze who passed him the bottle of tequila.

“I don’t know. The burrito tastes funny.” I set it down and picked up my fork and dove into a cheese enchilada. When I’d had my fill, I got up from my chair and went into the kitchen. As I dumped my scraps into the trash, I saw Smoke kick Bones’ booted foot.

Bones looked at Smoke and grinned.

Smoke took a long draught of the tequila bottle and then stood up. “You wanna see your room?”

“Sure,” I said, wondering what the hell was going on in the living room. There was tension in the air and I didn’t understand why.

I went to grab my suitcases, but Smoke said, “I got them.”
