“Hey,” he said, his gaze dipping lower.

I looked down and realized that my dress was no longer where it should’ve been—and my black push up bra was exposed. I hastily covered myself, my cheeks suffusing with heat.

Tavy came out of the bathroom, wearing her green dress from the previous night.

“Hey,” she greeted her father. “Sorry we crashed in your bed. Was the couch comfortable?”

“It was fine,” he said. “Your phone woke me. Everything okay?”

“Yeah. My job needs me sooner. Someone quit last minute so I need to get there as soon as possible to cover.”

“So, we won’t be doing a road trip,” he said. “Damn. I was looking forward to that.”

She walked over to her father and kissed his stubbly cheek. “I’m bummed about it too. Trust me. It was going to be fun tormenting you with my choice of music.”

“Don’t worry about it. I can handle the drive myself. I’ll hitch the car up at your place and get out of here this afternoon. We did all the heavy lifting yesterday.”

“I’ll get to Waco before you—I can’t really stay in my apartment without my stuff. I mean, I guess I could get an air mattress and paper plates—”

“You can stay at the clubhouse until I get your shit to town.”

“That would be so much easier.”

“Hey, Tavy?” I asked.

“Yeah?” She turned to look at me.

“How would you like a roommate?”

She widened her eyes. “You don’t mean—seriously? You want to move to Waco?”

My gaze darted between her and Smoke, but I settled on my best friend’s face. “I can’t stay in Vegas and have everything remind me of Knox. I’ve got to get out of here. And you moving to Waco… It just makes sense.”

“What about your job?” she asked. “You love your job.”

“I’ll figure something out. I’m not staying here for a job.”

A smile bloomed across Tavy’s elfin features and she bounded toward me. She all but pounced on me, her brown hair getting in my face and clouding my vision. “Yes! Please, yes! This is perfect.” She pulled back but kept her hands on my shoulders. “We can be roomies and you can ride with Dad to Waco!”

“Oh…” I struggled to keep my face expressionless. “I thought I’d fly.”

“Why?” Tavy shook her head. “It doesn’t make any sense. You’ve gotta move your stuff and Dad is already driving a moving truck to Waco. Just ride with him. Plus, I hate the idea of Dad driving alone.”

“I’ve only got a few things. I’m not taking any of Knox’s furniture.”

“You wanna get out of Vegas sooner, or later? Dad’s leaving today and you won’t even have to pay for checked bags. Make it easy on yourself.”

My gaze drifted from her to Smoke. I couldn’t tell what he was thinking. Silence permeated the room. Tension swelled as we all waited for Smoke to speak. Finally, he smiled and said, “I don’t mind you tagging along.”

I gritted out a smile. “Thanks.”

“We’ll hit Tavy’s apartment first, hitch up her car and then send her off, and then head to your place and grab your stuff.”

Tavy hugged me. “This is going to be so much fun!”

Chapter 3

The three of us took a cab to Tavy’s place. She changed quickly, grabbed her suitcase, and was back in the cab in just a few minutes.
