“You just moved in,” I said with a laugh. “What would you make?”

“Nothing. We’d order take-out and sit on the couch and eat,” she said.

“Pass,” I said. “I just got back to the clubhouse and I’m going to spend the rest of the night looking at apartments for rent.”

“Ick.”

“Hey, not all of us have a job that will give us a place to live.”

“I’m bummed we’re not living together,” she said.

“Same,” I admitted. “I bought a car today.”

“You did? Wow, that was fast.”

“Yeah, well, I need my own set of wheels so I can look at apartments. Otherwise, I’d have to rely on Bones to take me around town, and I have a feeling that’s not a good idea.”

“Why not? You seemed curious about him. What happened?”

“Bones and I—he’ a flirt. And I definitely wouldn’t know how to handle a man like him. You were right. He’s not the man to sow some oats with.”

“Hmm. I’m glad you came to that conclusion. So did he take you car shopping?”

“No. Your dad did.”

I instantly winced.

Dangerous game I’m playing.

“Oh, good. I’m glad he took you. Is it weird that you’re seeing him more than I am? I feel bad because he just got back into town, and I feel like I haven’t made any time for him.”

“Why don’t you invite him over for take-out instead of me?” I suggested.

She fell silent for a moment. “Yeah, you know what, that’s a great idea.”

“Yeah, just don’t tell him he was your second choice…”

“I definitely won’t. Thanks, Logan.”

“I’ll see you soon enough. Hopefully I’ll find an apartment pretty fast and then you can go furniture shopping with me. I don’t own anything,” I said with forlorn melancholy.

“Hey, don’t feel sad about that. That just means you get to start from scratch, paint the walls whatever color you want, get that couch that might be just a bit too expensive but that makes you feel like you’re napping on a cloud. You deserve nice things.”

Unbidden emotion lodged in my throat. “Thanks, Tav. You always know what to say so to cheer me up.”

“You’ll be okay, Logan. One day, you’ll look in the rearview mirror and wonder if any of this ever actually happened. Memories fade. If you let them.”

Chapter 22

“I’m never going to find a place,” I groaned two nights later. “I’m going to have to live in the clubhouse until the end of time, eating leftover pizza for breakfast and salt and vinegar chips for dinner.”

“Meals of champions,” Bones said as he passed me the container of take-out fries.

With a sigh, I leaned across the couch and grabbed a handful. “This is no better.”

“Is this that thing that you’re complaining about but you’re not really complaining about?” Bones asked. “It could be worse. You haven’t even seen people having sex in the common room yet.”

I blinked. “Does that happen often?”
