“Once Hayden marries, she gains control of the company as soon as the trust her father made executes. At that point, she’ll own fifty one percent of the shares. Her seat is the controlling seat on the board. With that position, she can override decisions of the rest of the board in full, even if it’s not a tie. Basically, she’s it. Now for the changes we’re going to make the moment you two are married. If Hayden passes away after you’re married, the company is going to be dissolved, the patents will all be sold to the highest bidder, and all proceeds will be donated to charity. It’s important to understand by doing this, we’re protecting her. There’s no incentive for Arnold, or anyone for that matter, to do anything to Hayden beyond that point. Properties in her name will transfer to her mother if her mother outlives her. If not, then they will be sold as well. If she dies or you divorce,” Vance looked to me and then to Bones, “you will get a monetary sum to be determined at a later date.”

Vance stared at me, his brow furrowed. “Your company’s share prices will most likely tank when the public becomes aware that you married a biker.”

“I discussed that with my attorney. I’m solvent enough that I’ll be able to buy back any shares that hit the market. I’m not worried about that. Is that all? Can we sign these and get out of here?”

Chapter 44

“I don’t know the first thing about pharmaceuticals or my father’s company. How am I even qualified to have a seat on the board?” I asked as I got into the car.

“Your mother has a seat on the board. Is she qualified?”

“Point.”

“You’re your father’s daughter. You care about his legacy and his vision. You don’t have to know all the steps of how to accomplish what he wanted to accomplish—that’s why you have lawyers, scientists, and other experts. What is it you want?”

“I want to stop hiding my head in the sand because it’s been too painful to have anything to do with my father’s company. And now I’m worried that it’s too late.”

“It’s not too late. We’re getting married in a couple of days…we’re stopping Arnold in his tracks.”

“We’ll never be able to prove what he did, will we?” I asked quietly.

Bones didn’t reply.

“He won’t be there.” A tear slipped out of my eye and rolled down my cheek. “My dad, I mean. He won’t be at our wedding. My mom won’t be there. Charlie won’t be there. No one can know we’re doing this and that means we’ll be alone. We’re not evening having a real wedding.”

I burst into tears just as the prospects opened the gates to the clubhouse. Bones drove through and parked the car. He turned off the ignition, unlatched his seatbelt, and then moved to wrap me in his arms.

He let me cry all over him.

“I’m sorry.” I hiccoughed. “I’m just exhausted. And when I’m exhausted, I can’t think straight.”

“It’s okay,” he crooned, brushing his lips across my head. “Cry it out.”

I heaved out a sigh and attempted to burrow deeper into his neck.

“I’ll make it up to you,” he said. “You want to have a real wedding with me in a top hat and coat tails, then I’ll do it.”

I grinned and lifted my head. “You really would, wouldn’t you?”

He brushed the tears from my cheeks. “Yeah, Duchess, I would.”

“Well, there’s no telling what will happen when my mom finds out we got married without her.”

“She’ll understand when we tell her why it had to be this way.”

“You don’t know my mother. My wedding was what she’s been training for her entire life.”

“She won’t care when you tell her we’re having kids.”

“Yeah, but that’s not for a while.”

When he didn’t reply, I cocked my head to the side. “Bones. Not for a while, right?”

“What’s a while?”

“I don’t know. A few years?”

“A few years? You really want to wait that long?”
