After the spasms slowed down and eventually ceased, she withdrew her mouth off him, giving a playful lick to his tip causing it to twitch before she stood back up. Layne smiled proudly at him, seeing how unraveled he was after finally getting his release.

She slowly ran her tongue over her lips, collecting the last tastes of him. “Feel better?”

He pulled himself back into his pants and began closing up shop. “Your mouth is a hell of a weapon.”

A knock came to the door before it popped open, Liam partially stepped inside. “Are we done here?”

She looked at Joey with satisfaction in her own emerald eyes at a job well done. “Yeah, I’d say so.” Layne stepped around Joey, pausing, and whispering to him, “Good luck with Rule One.” She approached the door and left into the hallway.

Liam stood there for a moment eyeing up the masked stranger. “We will drop off the deposit at our previously agreed upon location.” His eyes turned cold. “Oh, and don’t forget your belt.” Then he stepped back outside.

CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

As Layne stood outside the entrance to Death’s Door, her father leaned down and gave a quick peck to her cheek. “You let me know if you run into any problems with this guy, ok?”

“I’m sure I can handle it.” She gave him a reassuring smile to help him be put at ease.

Scott didn’t look entirely convinced, but he was doing his best to give Layne enough space to make more decisions.

Liam stepped outside, immediately drawing a cigarette from the pack tucked in the inside pocket of his suit jacket. While he flicked open a black metal lighter, he stared at Layne with something in his eyes that she didn’t quite understand.

“I’ll drive you home.” He said while the cigarette was wedged between his lips. The flame quickly lit the tip of it as he took a drag.

“I can get myself home just fine.” Once again here she was being treated like someone who had no voice.

“Liam will drive you home,” Scott interjected, making it a firm decision with the tone of his voice.

She made the effort to not make a mountain out of a molehill by sucking in a breath of cool air. “Fine.” It was as polite of a response that she could muster.

Her brother removed the cigarette, holding it between his pointer and middle fingers as he exhaled a stream of smoke. He pointed over at the dark blue sedan parked underneath the sole street light on the block.

Layne got herself into the passenger side, leaning back with a sigh while she waited for Liam to join her. He stood out on the sidewalk speaking with their father another minute or two before parting ways.

When he took his seat behind the wheel, a half-smoked cigarette still in his hand, Layne glanced over at him. “I could have just taken the subway like a normal person. It’s right on the corner.”

He took one long and final drag from the cancer stick before pitching it out his window. “Just what the hell are you doing?” The white stream of smoke escaped from his mouth as he spoke.

She motioned to what she thought was obvious by making a gesture at the gear shifter. “Waiting for you to drive me home.”

His hand smacked the top of the steering wheel. “That’s not what I’m talking about!”

She sat there blinking a few times at his sudden outburst, unclear what was triggering him.

He didn’t make her ask for more clarification. “With him. What the fuck, Layne?! Do you think I’m stupid?” Liam pointed to his temple for emphasis.

Still in a state of shock that Liam was this riled up, she sat there silently trying to even come up with an explanation.

“Li, I don’t know wh?—”

He turned in his seat to face her. “You just go around sucking any dick that presents itself like a fucking whore?!” His sudden outburst startled even her, having never seen him this bent out of shape before.

“Fuck you! You’re one to talk when you chase anything with two legs and a set of fake tits!” Her hand yanked the door handle and swung the door open.

Liam’s hand latched onto her upper arm, squeezing painfully hard. “No, you don’t get to embarrass our family.”

Layne winced as his hand prevented her from getting out of the car. “Ow! Let go, Liam!”

His fingers dug into her even more when she strained to pull away. “Close the damn door, Layne, we’re not done here!” An intensity was in his eyes that sent chills down her spine.
