“Oh, god.” I cringe. He’s not joking.

CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

IF A WOMAN LETS YOU SEE HER SOUL, IT’S YOUR FIRST GLIMPSE OF HEAVEN.

Price

“Can you keep a secret?”Scottie asks while we unpack a new shipment of food.

You have no idea.

“I can try.”

“I’m engaged,” she says just shy of a squeal.

I feel her gaze on me and sense her trying hard to control her body, trembling with excitement. But I don’t look at her. “Who’s the lucky guy?”

“Stop.” She wads up a piece of packing paper and throws it at me.

“That was quick.” I toss the wadded paper back to her.

She stacks the bags of rice onto the counter with a content sigh. “When you know, you know.”

“So he asked, and you right away knew?”

Her hesitation says everything. When she doesn’t answer, I give her the hairy eyeball.

“Don’t look at me like that.”

“Like what?” I cut the tape and flatten the empty box.

“It wasn’t your typical proposal.”

“Have you been proposed to a lot?” I chuckle.

“Not as much as you might think, given my level of awesomeness.” She flips her hair and smirks. “Koen’s different.” She scans the bags of rice into the register. “He’s honest.”

“If honesty is the bar, you need to set your standards a little higher.”

As if I’m one to talk.

“It’s different. Koen’s honesty is all-revealing and all-consuming. Honesty can be as simple as the absence of lying. Koen doesn’t hide who he is or what he wants. He owns his mistakes. And he’s not afraid to tell me about his dreams, even when he doesn’t know if I want to share them.”

I open the next box. “I’m happy for you, but don’t think for a second that he’s not afraid to tell you those things. If he loves you, he’s scared to death to tell you because he knows he could lose you if you don’t feel the same. He’s not fearless. He’s brave. There’s a difference.”

“Mmm. I never thought of it like that. It makes me love him even more.”

“So why did you say yes?”

“Because—”

“And don’t say it’s because you love him.”

“Jesus, Dr. Phil, you’re really in a mood today.”

“The past few days, I’ve been seeing things clearly. It’s … freeing.”

Again, I feel her gaze on me. “You’re a miracle, Price Milloy. I hope you know that.”
