“Ember, I know you and I haven’t had much time alone and I know things have been … insane, but I wanted to tell you how sorry I am about how we treated you after the battle. It’s been weighing on my mind ever since and I know a simple apology won’t fix things, but I really am sorry.”

He did look like a man tormented. Reaching out, I gripped his hand and asked, “Do you love me, Riddick?”

His hand squeezed mine and he reached out to grab my other hand. “I do.”

“Promise me something?”

“Anything.”

“If this curse kills me, don’t let Caleb shy away from becoming king still. I feel in my soul that this is what he’s supposed to do.”

“You’re not going to die, Ember,” he said sternly and pulled me into chest, hugging me tightly. “We’re going to find a way to break the curse and enjoy our anniversary.”

“So, you guys do remember our anniversary?” I teased.

He pushed me back and asked, “How could I forget the day the most beautiful woman in the world tossed the mage king across her lawn?”

Laughing, I shook my head. “That feels like it was a lifetime ago.”

Fingertips brushing my cheek, he smiled and said, “It’s been the best lifetime I’ve ever experienced.”

Going up on my toes, I pressed a kiss to his cheek. “Thank you.”

“Riddick makes breakfast since he didn’t help carry supplies in,” Caleb ordered.

Riddick winked at me and said, “Worth it.”

Chapter

Four

Just as we were finishing our lunch of sandwiches and salads, Caleb’s phone rang. He set it on the center of the dining room table we all sat at and answered it on speaker phone. “Nana, you’re on speaker. Did you find something?”

“Where are you right now?” she demanded.

“Our clan house,” he answered. “We thought isolating ourselves would be smart, to avoid infecting my parents.”

“Who was the first one to get the mark and when?” she asked and it sounded like she was walking somewhere outdoors.

“Ember, and the day we were in that huge fight at the park, three days’ ago,” Riddick answered.

“Shit,” she hissed. “Can you teleport here?”

“Ember has never been there, so she can’t teleport there. Nana, what’s going on?”

“I need you to get Ember to me as soon as possible. Can you teleport to your parents’ house?”

I nodded. “I can.”

“Teleport to the front yard, bring all of you. When you get there, do not touch anyone. Wait for me.”

“We understand,” Caleb said and hung up. “Clean up fast and then we’ll teleport.”

My heart hammered in my chest as I stood on shaky legs to carry my plate to the kitchen. Why was Kara, Queen of the Elves and one of the best healers in the world, so scared?

Triston took my plate from me and I was left standing in the open area of the kitchen, watching them.

They hurried back to me and set their hands on me.
