“Marco drove me there and then dropped me off here.” I smile, watching Dante’s frown deepen.

Good.

“And why didn’t he tell me?” That thick brow is raised like he thinks I’m the one about to get in trouble when it’s very much him in the doghouse.

“I told him not to.”

“Why?”

“Because I wanted to see the look on your face when I walk in and tell you I spent twenty minutes in a police station.” He looks to the sky and mumbles to himself.

“Delilah—”

“How long?” I ask, staring at him, my hands on my hips.

He stops.

He stops and that’s when I know he’s been hiding this from me.

“Dante.”

He sighs and stands from his chair, moving around the kitchen island, a hand out to me.

“Delilah—”

I step back, pointing a single red-tipped finger at him.

“You tell me everything, we can talk. Until then, you stay there.” He gives me an annoyed look and rolls his eyes but doesn’t argue.

“He’s been on my radar for a year.”

“A year?”

“Not even near us, over in New Hampshire, but I know people and they keep me updated on things.”

“New Hampshire?!”

“He lost that election to Sam and left the state, you know that.” I do. Alfredo kept his word, working closely with a family friend to make sure Shane Turner was not elected the next time he was up, and when Shane lost, he fled the state in shame.

“Why did he go to New Hampshire?”

“Why does the man do anything he does, Lilah?”

Valid.

“So, why are the Hudson City detectives talking to me about him?”

“You tell me,” he says, and I just raise an eyebrow at him.

He sighs when he realizes I’m not telling him anything without learning whatever he knows.

“I don’t know the full details,” he says. “I’ll get them, but I didn’t even know he was in the state.”

“He’s detained downtown right now.” Dante runs a hand through his hair and sighs.

“He’s been racking up debts up north. On my radar only in the sense that I needed to know if he started to come back. A year ago, I had to send Tino up there, have a few words.”

“A year ago,” I say, annoyed. “Tino never mentioned it to me.”
