I feel like an ass for revealing Lila’s secrets to this man, but he should know if not just so he can stop hating Lilah, but also because if and when Lola finds out, he can help.

The girls’ relationship is buried among lies they each told to protect the other. It’s going to cut deep when everything comes to light. He’ll need to be armed with whatever he can to help his girl when she needs him most.

“Not sure how much she’ll tell your girl over there. Lola might have protected her but Lilah protects her sister just as much. She left the hospital, talked to Turner. Went to the Russos, met with some bitch and decided she was gonna get revenge on my family and prove herself to hers at the same time.” Ben hits a sensitive part and I cringe, and I watch a hint of a smile hit his lips. “Chill he fuck out, man. I’m not your enemy.” His smile grows, a hint of masochism there.

“Not gonna lie, it’s kind of fun, making a mafioso twinge.”

“Jesus fuckin’ Christ.” I shake my head, careful not to move my body. “Anyway. She walked into my club—”

That has Ben stopping, sitting up straight, his machine still buzzing in hand.

“Which club?”

I sigh.

“Jerzy Girls.”

“For the love of fuck, please tell me the mayor of Ocean View’s daughter wasn’t taking her clothes off in a fuckin’ mafia-owned strip club.”

I pause, contemplating how to answer.

“I mean,” I start. “Okay, so, the mayor of Ocean View only really has one true daughter and Lola definitely wasn’t stripping at Jerzy Girls.” His eyes close and he breathes in deep, like he’s trying to center himself before he speaks again.

“Yeah, Lola can never find this out. Oh, Jesus. She’ll have a fucking heart attack. She’ll make Lilah move in with her. Apply for WITSEC. Or maybe have her committed.”

“That’s why I’m telling you, so you can help if this shit gets out.” He looks at me and nods, a look of . . . appreciation—maybe?—playing on his face.

“Okay so . . . she was working at your club?” The words come through gritted teeth, and he shakes his head to himself before he moves back to the ink on my chest.

“I moved her to waitress quick. Then my assistant.” He stops again to glare at me.

“How convenient. You fucked your assistant?”

And that’s when my death glare comes out.

“Don’t you fuckin’ even insinuate that shit. I knew who she was. She was my assistant so I could spend time with her while keeping her away from my fuckin’ nephew. I knew what her plan was from the start, knew it was dangerous, knew I wanted to find a way to help her.” He’s not buying it.

“Oh, and you just happened to fuck her along the way?”

I take a deep, calming breath before I look at him and he can see it—the pure fury running in my veins.

“That was the last time. Last time I take that shit. You try it again, don’t care if we’ll be family one day, if one day you’ll be marrying my sister-in-law, I’ll fuckin’ knock your teeth out.”

He stares at me for what feels like an eternity and I wonder if I went for it, would he just start swinging with that machine? And if he did, would it end in a bunch of crazy lines all over my body?

But then, he smiles.

“I think I might like you, man,” he says.

“Weird fuckin’ way of showing it. Not sure how I feel about you.” That smile gets wider.

Maybe he’s insane.

He’s an artist—maybe he’s got some kind of Van Gogh complex.

“You were keeping her safe?”

I nod.
