“A special angel like you could never be part of my future.”

She knew men like Aiden made every woman feel special and desirable. Even the liabilities. He’d admitted that she couldn’t be in his future. She hardly knew him, but it felt like a door had closed between them.

She pulled back a few inches to get some space, but he kept his arms around her. “We need to look like a couple, love. For the witnesses.”

She nodded but had to ask, “What is your job, besides saving and charming endangered women?”

“Are you charmed?”

She pushed out a breath. “Any woman would be.”

“True, very true.” He smiled as if they were simply teasing. “My purpose is to protect the innocent and rid the world of filth like Jorge. Often single-handedly, but I am building an impressive team. Forty-four ops currently and growing fast. Everyone wants to work for the second top security specialist in the world. I have to give Sutton credit as the top… for now.” He puffed out his chest.

She couldn’t help but laugh at his bravado. Why did he have to be so irresistible? “And Jorge was an assignment from Sutton Smith?”

“I’ve already said too much.” His lips turned down. “If I have one downfall, it’s my pride.” He winked. “I find myself wanting to brag to you and impress you.”

“You definitely are the bragging type.”

“Ah, come now,” he protested. “I already admitted my one fault. I don’t favor being both prideful and a braggart.”

Chalisa laughed despite herself. Certainly his pride and his inability to be faithful were both his downfalls. His bragging was endearing.

She shouldn’t pre-judge, but he was like a younger and more handsome James Bond, all the charm even without the British accent. No matter that she wasn’t confident or sassy enough to have a relationship with someone like Aiden and he wasn’t the type to stick around, she was grateful for him and would never forget him or his gallant rescue.

“But you definitely have impressed me,” she admitted. “Thank you for protecting me. I’ll be eternally in your debt.”

Arching up, she softly kissed his cheek, the short hair of his beard tickling her lips. Aiden turned his head quickly and their lips brushed. She pulled in a sharp breath of surprise, her entire body tingling and her heart racing. The contact was brief, but she’d never felt anything so incredible and uplifting.

His gaze was zeroed in on her. Yearning filled his eyes, but there was something else there too—surprise. “I enjoy having you in my debt,” he murmured. “I have never met such an intriguing and beautiful sweetheart.”

Chalisa could not catch a full breath. It would be no effort at all to press her lips to his. She could only imagine a kiss with a handsome enigma like Aiden would be the most thrilling experience of her life. She hardly knew him. His compliments made her feel all lit up inside when they should enforce her suspicions that he was a playboy charmer at a level she’d never seen off the movie screen.

She eased back a fraction, but their mouths were still far too close. Fire filled her chest from the hungry, longing look in his incredible blue eyes. He looked at her as if she was the only woman in the world who could make him happy and love him. Crazy and unrealistic, but somehow undeniable.

Was he that good of an actor, or was it possible these stolen moments together felt as special and otherworldly to him as they did to her?

“Someday I’ll hopefully repay that debt,” she managed, her voice far too breathy. She was flirting—she should be proud. She was definitely exhilarated. And also terrified of how horrific the letdown would be when she was no longer in his arms or the object of his desire. He would move on to another woman within the hour and not look back.

“No debt-repaying today?” he murmured, his gaze dipping to her lips before meeting her gaze again.

The music covered her short pants for air.

Aiden was confident he’d claim a kiss. He knew he had her in his grasp and she was gone over him.

She had to keep her head on straight. Not only was he too charming, he’d already said he wouldn’t see her again. At least he was honest about not committing to anything beyond the moment.

Chalisa would never be a fling for someone. Her circle was small. She invested in people deeply, and this man could wound her severely if she let him into her heart.

“Check back later,” she tried to tease, easing back even more.

She saw disappointment in his bright blue eyes, but he surprised her by breaking their connection, turning and looking out the window. She followed his gaze. There were more lights and businesses outside. They’d left the long stretch of beach and landscaped resorts and were in the main business district of Cancun. She’d seen this area from the airport-transfer bus.

“Almost there,” he told her.

“I swear it took us over an hour to get from Cancun to the resort when we flew in a few days ago.”

“Did you fly in at about five p.m.?”
