The demons that haunt Kevin and me are ones I don’t wish upon anyone. It has haunted us for different reasons but because of the same incident.

I’m coming for you for the damage you’ve done. Are you ready?

CHAPTER 7

THE YORK BUILDING

Adam

I walk toward the York building to meet Reese. I’ve been anxious all morning and can barely hide it.

Kevin was in better spirits since talking to Reese. He gave me another name on my list. One that will be an arduous task to get to, but that’s for another day. Today is about her…and The York Building.

I stand outside and look up at the high-rise. It’s not the biggest in the city, but it has enough rise to make a statement. The untinted windows of the main floor give me the opportunity to see the intense security from the ground level. Armed guards, metal detectors, swipe cards to get by to the elevators.

Mitchell DuPont, you wicked man… “I know your secrets,” I sing to myself.

I send off a text letting Reese know I’m out front. Pocketing my phone and walking to a nearby bench to wait.

The elevator doors open and she emerges in a power suit and leather heels. Smiling to the security team she pushes through the double doors like the boss she should be. The wind jostles her perfect hair. Mesmerizing. She takes off her blazer as she walks, showing off her tight button-down shirt and her slacks that hug her hips. Just. So. Perfectly.

She smiles when she sees me and I pray that espresso breath still lingers. Fuck mints. That coffee smell is arousing.

She pushes the double doors open and I look down, needing a minute before looking back up. I need a minute, but this also gives her a moment to check me out. As if I didn’t catch you already.

I give her a wink to see that beautiful blush form across her cheeks. “Good afternoon, garbage woman.”

She laughs and shakes her head. “Afternoon.”

“Hungry?” I hold my elbow out, hoping she loops her arm through. To my benefit, she does.

“Starving!” She cups her stomach.

“So, you said you know the best food truck. What my girl wants, my girl gets.”

She pushes a small bunch of hair behind her ear and nods. “I like the sound of that.”

She leads me to a hibachi truck and we stand looking at the menu on the side of the truck.

“The portions are big…” she starts.

“I guess I can share my food.” I nudge her with my shoulder.

She faintly giggles and smiles up at me. “You don’t have to. I just never finish.”

“Well, we’ll fix that.” I look down at her and smirk.

“John!” she squeals.

“I’m talking about getting a side salad and meal for us to share. What did you think…. Oh, you perv!” I say louder than she would like.

Her hand covers my mouth to shush me. Looking around at the bare sidewalk, hoping no one is listening. She rests her head on my shoulder and finally drops her hands. I chuckle and marvel at her innocence. So fucking innocent, and I can barely handle it.

She finally looks at me, and her green eyes hold an embarrassed look. My hand caresses the side of her cheek and I gently grasp and pull her face toward me. I lay a gentle kiss on her forehead and then turn to the food truck.

I step forward and place our order. I hand the cook a hundred-dollar bill and tell him to keep the change. When I turn and look back at Reese, her eyes are wide.

“What?” I ask, confused.
