“Are you okay?”

“Um… no,” she truthfully says.

I nod and wait for her next move.

“How did you know?” she asks, her hand still resting on the door handle of the dark-stained front door.

I look at her and bite my cheek. “Past military. There was a light that flickered in my peripheral view. It was the sun’s reflection off the sniper scope.”

“Fuck.” The naughty word escapes her sweet lips. “John, do you think you can stay with me?”

I shouldn’t stay. Those demons are lurking right at the surface, and I can tell this may be a dreadful night for terrors. Her eyes plead with mine and I know I’m fucked.

“Yes.”

“Thank you,” she sighs with relief.

She walks into her house and holds the door open. I slide by her, keeping my eyes on her alone.

“What do you need?” I ask.

“Just you.”

She doesn’t falter in her words. I walk to her and wrap my arms around her shoulders as hers quickly cover my waist and back, holding on to me. I kiss the top of her head and rock her back and forth.

“I’m going to shower. I’ll be right back,” she whispers. I reluctantly let her go.

She walks to her bedroom and closes the door behind her. I pull out my phone and send a text to Kevin.

Something happened, but Reese is safe. I’m going to be watching her tonight. I’ll tell you more tomorrow.

He texts back. If anything happens. I will end you!

I trust his word, but I’d end myself to ensure she is safe. Got it.

I put the phone back in my pocket and head to her kitchen. I’m looking at her fridge and a business card catch’s my eye. It’s the logo that I’ve seen before.

I send another text to Kevin. Who is Dr. Dodson?

The therapist Reese was seeing. Dr. Allison Dodson.

Thanks.

What’s up? Another name added to the list?

Possibly. I’ll know more later. Got to go. I throw my phone back in my pocket and look at the card. Dodson… Dodson… Dodson. Tip of the tongue, I know the name.

“Hey,” her raspy voice calls out from the other room.

I walk out of the kitchen and meet her in the living room. I sit on the couch, opening my arms for her. Her body falls to my side and she pulls a blanket over us both. She rests her head against my chest and I rub my hand up her arm.

“It will be okay,” I try to tell her.

She nods her head but doesn’t say a word. We lie there for a while, looking out the big window to the street. Watching cars and people walk by as if nothing happened today. She finally looks up at me with her big green eyes as they beg for something, anything, to make sense of what happened today. I’d love to tell her, but I can’t. She’s in enough danger just by being with me.

I move my body more, opening it up for her to lie against mine more comfortably. She doesn’t question or request, just letting her body move into me so perfectly.

“Rest. I’ll make sure we have coffee for the morning.”
