“The fuck is wrong with you?” he yells while picking me up and throwing me on the floor. Leaning over my body, he lands a couple of good punches to my face. Kevin must realize what is happening and stands up. I groan in pain while lying on the floor. He holds his hand out to help me up. “Adam… you don’t have to do this.”

I shake my head, smacking his hand away. I wobble when I stand, heading to the kitchen to grab a beer. I can’t form any words to explain how much I hate myself at this moment.

“I get it,” he finally admits.

“You don’t,” I say as I walk back outside onto the porch and sit on the steps. Kevin sits next to me with a beer of his own. His knuckles are bleeding, which causes half my lip to turn up. He got a few good shots in. “I love her and she is in love with John.” I take a large gulp of my drink. “When she says John, I want to scratch my own eyes out. She has screamed the name in pleasure and…” I stop midsentence. I want to cry, but no tears can form. I stand and walk back inside, tossing the beer into the trash.

I head to my bedroom, slam the door behind me, and sit on the side of the bed. I am fighting to keep up the charade. I pull my phone out and open my contact list. My thumb hovers over Reese’s name.

I press call and wait for her to answer.

CHAPTER 20

NO TURNING BACK

Adam

I quickly hang the phone up when the first ring sounds and toss it back on the dresser, trying to compose myself. Switching up, I grab my other phone from the nightstand. I need to make plans before the next phase has to come. Be smart, Adam. The phone rings and I sit on the bed, waiting for an answer. My gut wrenches at what I have to do.

“Hello?” the deep voice on the other end of the phone answers. My favorite hacker, Donald.

“Update?” I sternly ask. My contact does not like small talk.

“Jack is moving money around. Started as small funds here and there, but now the offshore accounts are being merged and moved to a separate account. What is under Allison’s name is now being transferred to their kids’ names. The money is almost gone. Investors are contacting him, asking for their investments back. Jack is taking money off the top too. Using business expenses as the reason. It’s smart in the short term, but if you look at the long game, it’s pretty ballsy.”

“How do we stop it?”

“I’ve set up a fake email account from his assistant, Jenny, or whoever, and sent a confidential and encrypted file to the SEC. Their technology department will track the money before it hits the black web. The banks in the black web are crafty, so once the money goes there, it’s gone and untraceable.”

“What will happen to Jenny?” I have to ask. I have always tried to limit involving innocent lives as best I can.

“Jenny will be fine. They will only see that the email is a scam after it all blows up for DuPont and their lawyers put the fine-tuning on their documents. The email itself is one letter off Jenny’s actual email. The SEC will stroke their boner hard with the information we give them. By the time they question Jenny, someone should catch on that she didn’t send it. She’ll be in the clear and you’ll belong gone.”

“The other employees?” I have to ask, as I am thinking of only one.

“They will have to find additional work. This email, along with everything else we have accumulated over the last few months, is enough to bring the entire DuPont family empire down.”

I nod, not that he can see, and I suppress the vomit that wants to escape at my next request.

“I need a package,” I ask.

“Body cleanup package or new-baby package?”

I chuckle at the analogy. How true it is for the way my life has been going. “New-baby package.”

“Where?”

“Seller’s choice.”

“Oh, I get to choose!” I can hear the excitement in his voice. He gets to create a whole new world for me at my expense.

“Antarctica too far for a trip?”

“Probably not far enough,” I admit.

“It’s that bad, huh?”

“Torture.” I hang my head in defeat.
