She thanks the man and walks out toward the main street. I follow along like a sick puppy. Her long green dress gently blows in the wind. She does nothing other than pop into different stores. I see her pocket a few items and I smile. Enough is enough for now, so I leave her to her shopping and head back to the hotel.

Climbing out of the elevator, I am met by the toddler with a temper at my door. Kevin sits holding the Sharpie that was left in the car. The poor guy has experienced the hell his sister can bring, and he looks horrible.

“Fancy seeing you here,” I say.

He jumps to his feet and comes toward me. Engulfing me in a tight hug, I can hear him huff.

“Don’t cry. You will make it weird,” I whisper, causing him to laugh.

“I thought you were dead!”

I chuckle at his response. “Let’s go inside and talk.”

He nods and finally lets go of me. I unlock the door and he follows me inside, looking around the room. I sit on the uncomfortable sofa in the room and he sits on the bed facing me. His weary eyes droop, but they are filled with compassion.

“You were so focused on Reese that you didn’t even notice me. I watched how you couldn’t take your eyes off her.” He exposes me. I don’t know what to say, so I just nod. “What is the plan? Are you going to hurt her?”

“Hurt her?” I laugh. “She chained me up and tried to burn down the house with me inside.”

“Exactly! Are you going after her? As pissed as I am, she is my little sister. I won’t let you—”

“Stop!” I cut him off. “I will fuck with her, but I will not hurt her.”

He nods his head. “What do you need from me?”

I laugh hard at his question. I wipe the tears from my eyes and groan. “Oh, Kevin. You are too much. I don’t need or want anything from you. What I will do to your sister you will not want to know or be a part of.” I give him a wink, and his face morphs into disgust.

I stand, slapping him on the shoulder.

“Really?” he expresses. “Really?”

I can see he doesn’t see it or understand it. He most likely never will. He stands facing me.

“I never really knew you, did I?” he asks.

I shake my head. “No, my friend. You didn’t. I don’t even know who I was before, but your devil of a sister killed that person.” He looks at me and I can see the questions forming in his head. “What about you, huh?”

He nods, with more questions circling his mind. He points to his head and I watch a tear fall. “The voices don’t stop. I can’t get them to stop. I have no one else to talk to about this.”

I understand completely. As he sits in front of me, I’m reminded of when I felt that way. “You will be fine. You will find your feet again, my friend… outside of me and your sister, of course. The voices rarely go away. I have to admit that I still hear them, too. We will make sure you are okay.” I attempt to comfort him. “In the meantime, while I enjoy my game with your sister, you enjoy the beach, and listen to the waves. Gawk over some prissy woman who wears too much makeup and not enough clothes.”

He smiles and stands. “No time like the present, am I right?”

He gives me another hug before slapping my back and walking out of the room. He turns back toward me one more time and I decide to put him out of his misery.

“I’ll be there when you fall. I’ll punch the shit out of your face until you come back to reality.”

He huffs out in relief and walks out the door, still holding the Sharpie in his hands. I walk out to the balcony and lean over to look down the beach to see the sky wheel.

Step one is done… step two… Reese Grafton, I will make you beg for me.

CHAPTER 31

ON TO THE NEXT

Adam

She had lain on the beach for the rest of the afternoon and my focus was only on the perfect curves of her body. How on earth could anyone ever compete with that little psycho? Every once in a while, she would turn over to let the sun try to damage that sweet skin. My favorite part was when she took a dip in the warm ocean. Dunking her head under the water, she emerged like a goddess. The sun reflected off her skin and a glow surrounded her. She is better than any dream.
