“You know what I want to do to you. If you want to explain what happened after I left you, then you will need to stop that.” His eyes pinpoint my lips.

I take another sip of my drink before putting it down and coming face-to-face with him. I sigh before explaining.

“You know, you fucked up every plan I had and didn’t even say sorry,” I give him sass. That earns a smile that makes me wet. Focus, Reese.

With a deep breath, I explain what happened with Allison at her house, how I convinced her to leave, and my plan to execute her over a cliff. He nodded in agreement yet didn’t say a word. I continue on telling him how she had lost her mind in the car. The unbuckled seat belt, the curve, the thoughts of never seeing him again.

I wipe a few tears away and feel his hand caressing my leg. From my toes to my hip, his hands memorize every curve. It lulls me to peace.

“When I woke up in the car, upside down, I cut myself out of the seat belt. I crawled out and looked for Allison, finding her body a few hundred feet away. She had gone through the windshield and she was chest down, groaning. Fucking drunk bitch survived,” I hiss. “I just lay there and watched her choking for air. Just watched her breathing slow down and then stop altogether. Covered in blood, Allison was barely recognizable with the injuries to her fucking face.”

I sit back on the pillows to rest. Adam has his eyes set on me and hasn’t wavered. God, I want to mount him and make him do unspeakable things…

“Someone finally stopped and called for help. I claimed I was Allison and that she was me. So many people arrived on the scene and they tried to revive her. They got her pulse back, so they transported her to the hospital. Still in shock after what happened, I refused medical treatment, knowing I could handle my own wounds. Instead, I insisted on traveling to the hospital with Allison. Had to promise them I would get checked out there. I grabbed my purse, her purse, and went with the driver. At the hospital, they took her blood, and I sat with them, watching what they were doing. They had to trach her since her face and neck were most likely broken.”

I take a few deep breaths and another sip of my lukewarm coffee.

“They were so busy that they didn’t see me grab a syringe to take my blood. Ducking behind a curtain, I poorly filled a few tubes and replaced hers with mine while everyone was fussing over her. I took a few of the clean towels and went to the bathroom to clean up. When I finished, I took the blood-soaked towels and dropped them on the floor where they had a couple lying. The doctors were screaming at each other about what to do until they finally wheeled her broken ass to surgery. I left my purse with all my things and grabbed hers. I sat in the emergency room until they found me several hours later. They informed me she didn’t make it through the surgery. There was too much damage. Adam, you would have applauded my acting. I cried like a baby. It was beautiful.”

I laugh, remembering the moment. When covered in blood, looking like Carrie, people don’t question who you are or what happened. It’s just a constant stream of apologies for a “friend” that passed away.

Adam kisses the inside of my leg, bringing me comfort and a sense of safety.

“I walked out of the hospital and down the street to find a hotel. Stopped at a twenty-four-hour gas station to grab a few shirts and sweats or pants. Anything I could find. When I walked into the hotel’s lobby, the lady looked at me, horrified. She was scared, but I convinced her I was okay, showing her the discharge paperwork.”

I shake my head at the thought of all the stares.

“I got into my hotel room and showered the day off. I grabbed the first aid kit I took from Allison’s house and cleaned myself up. The bruise from the seat belt across my chest hurt the most. The stitches on my collarbone didn’t hurt as bad.”

Adam reaches over and the tip of his finger traces along the scar. He says nothing but gestures for me to keep talking.

“Then, the articles came out. I was relieved when they said that I had died. Then, I just needed to make sure the CIA believed it. I knew they would search for Allison. Figured if she was all over, it would have them chasing their tails and they wouldn’t look into my ‘death’ any further. Found an acting company that would hire actors around the world. Allison’s money wasn't all tied up or frozen. She forgot about her corporate cards for her therapy business. It wasn't in the family name or Mitchell’s name. She’s a stupid ho.”

Adam chuckles at my cheekiness. He pulls me up to straddle his body and there goes my dirty little mind. He nips at my neck and I lose all resolve.

“Keep talking,” he demands.

My stomach clenches at his tone.

“They told me you were looking for me. When they could get a picture of you, it broke my heart how discouraged you looked. You look like absolute shit.”

I lean down and kiss his shoulder. His arms wrap tightly around my waist, pulling my body closer to his. This thin sheet is getting in the way.

“I was lost without you,” he says. “If you only knew…”

“I know,” I whisper. My fingers trace down his back, feeling the scratch marks of our lovemaking session last night. His skin prickles, causing me to smile. My touch does this to him.

The last photo, when he took the lady out in Dubai, killed me. He was so torn. After that, I didn’t see him. There was nothing. Looked for him everywhere and stupid me I forgot about the letter. I went as fast as I could to Italy and searched for my love.

“Were you really going to do it?” I whisper. Needing to hear him say it.

I had walked up to find him, arms open, facing the cliffside, ready to fall. I ran as fast as I could to rip him away from whatever thoughts he may have had.

“I couldn’t live anymore with the voices in my head. You were the only demon to silence it all. I really thought you died,” he says, nuzzling his nose into my hair. His hands gripping my skin hard.

“I can’t live without you either,” I say.

He pushes us apart slightly to look me in the eye. His large hands cup my face and I sigh in relief.
