“Good.” I can’t help but smirk. “Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone you lost.”

“Good, my ego can only take so many hits. You seem to leave me weak.”

My teeth clamp down on my lower lip. I don’t miss the affectionate tone of his words. Being out of my comfort zone, an apology is all I can come up with.

“I’m sorry.” I mean, I am sorry, but also, I’m not even close to being sorry.

“Baby, don’t be. Come on, let’s order some dinner and watch a movie.”

Baby? My stomach might as well have a seizure at this swooning thing.

“Okay, but we have to shower first. I don’t want my house to have sand throughout.” I unwrap myself from him. We swim back to the shore and lazily walk, hand in hand, back to my house. I tug him along to the side of the house toward my outdoor shower. As we approach, I strip down and toss my soaked shirt and shorts on the deck. Turning back, I see Victor has stopped in his tracks. His eyes dart back and forth between me and the beach area to see if anyone is coming.

“It’s a private beach. No one is around. Take off your shorts, Victor.”

He gives me a mischievous look. His fingers dip into the waistband of his boxers, and without breaking eye contact, he slowly inches them down. I can’t look away, not for a second. Then he stalks toward me, and I know I’m grinning like a fool. I’ve never had this much fun with someone. I quickly turn and rush to the shower, throwing the handle on and waiting for it to heat. Victor rushes behind me, driving us under the water. I grab the soap to lather my hands and Victor snakes his hand between mine, stealing the lavender-scented soap. My hands touch every part of his body, and he caresses mine. He swipes my shampoo and conditioner combination, squirting a hefty amount into the palm of his hand. I can’t help the obnoxious groan that escapes when his fingers dance along my scalp. His giggles are so infectious that I can’t resist joining in. I’ve realized that I have completely let him into my life, and for once, I’m not afraid.

We dry off and get semi-dressed as best we can. I watch Victor bring pillows and blankets into the living room. Sliding the small coffee table to the side, he continues to make a mini bed on the floor. I call in an order for Chinese food. It’s one of the few places I know will deliver.

“It’s weird you don’t have a TV in your room,” he says.

“Why? I barely watch it.” I shrug.

“That’s baffling.” He shakes his head.

“Why? How many do you have at your place?”

Victor sits back, and I can see his mind counting. “Four, no wait for five. The fifth is in my home office.”

“Does anyone live with you?” A minor panic settles under my skin.

“Hell no. I have news, court TV, and ESPN playing on different TVs in different parts of my apartment. That way, I won’t miss anything.”

“Why?” I look at him, baffled.

“I don’t know.” He huffs. “I just kept them on those channels, and it’s on almost all the time. One TV is in my bathroom, so I can watch while I get ready.”

I know my mouth has dropped because that is mad. “What?”

“That’s just a lot.”

“Why don’t you have one in your bedroom at least?” he questions.

An innocent enough question. “Better things to do in the bedroom, baby.”

“Oh yeah? Like?” He smirks, encouraging me to keep talking.

“Sleep! Sleep, you fool!” I giggle. “But in all seriousness, we didn’t have a TV growing up, so I got used to not having it. I don’t think I’m missing much. I just have Netflix and basic cable.”

“Wow, so…”

“Amazing? incredible?”

“Crazy. I keep forgetting how different our lives are.” The way he responds has me second-guessing everything.

“Yeah, we are.” I know he didn’t mean it negatively, but it’s a slight slap in the face to be reminded how much our lives clash with one another. But that’s normal for most couples, right? Whoa, I’m getting ahead of myself.

“I’m sorry. It wasn’t meant to be taken like that. I mean, it’s true, just I …”
