I sigh, getting up to walk back into the castle. It seems like we have settled everything down now, that I have promised her I will find her another suitable husband, but still, I do not know how I will look into her eyes next time I see Megan. I can see it in her eyes that she also was happy to be my wife. I really hope that the husband I find for her is better than me and deserves such an angel as she is.
I enter the castle. The way to my room is on the way to the dining-room. Megan and her sister are having breakfast there. I decide not to enter the dining-room, but to walk past it. Maybe it will be better if I let her be free of my presence at least for some time. I do not think she wants to see me right now. Also, I do not know what to speak with her while having breakfast. Most probably, there will be awkward silence, because we were talking just a few minutes ago, and the conversation was not a very pleasant one.
I silently walk past the dining-room and go along the corridors to my room for some thought and rest.
Megan
At last we are alone in the dining-room. Forba and Anabel left me and Elsie here and went to do their business. I really like them – they are friendly and sincere, also, they do not ask us any questions, even though I know that they have many questions about me and Elsie. I am grateful to them for not asking those questions, because I do not know how I will feel when answering them.
‘Meg, tell me everything,’ Elsie says in a soft voice, almost whispering. She still does not know what I have spoken with Sloan about. When I returned, she was waiting for me in the dining-room. 'Did you speak with MacKinnon? What did he say? What is going on? Why are you so sad?' She cannot wait to have the answers to all these questions.
‘He is engaged to another woman,’ I say flatly. The initial shock has worn off, obviously, and now I am trying to stay cool and make good decisions. ‘Says he did not agree our marriage with our father in the end, and everything turned out like this.’
‘What do you mean? Father promised you to him,’ Elsie opens her eyes wider. 'What did he say about it?'
‘He says that they did not agree on it in the end, like, eventually, they did not talk about it again, so he went off and started looking for another fiancée,’ I shrug. ‘And found one, as we see now, who is on her way here,’ I add.
‘Oh, Meg, what are we going to do?’ Elsie asks with a worried tone in her voice. 'If his fiancée is on her way, it means that we cannot stay here. His fiancée will be mad if she knows we are no relatives and staying here. She might be jealous.'
‘The laird said that we are still under his protection, and that he will find a suitable husband for me,’ I reply. ‘At least something good is happening in the middle of all the bad things. He said that we must stay here and feel ourselves at home. I do hope his fiancée will not make a scene out of it. I do not know,' I shrug. 'Sloan made it clear to me that we are under his own responsibility, and that he will never let anything bad happen to us while we are here. And we are staying here until we find a good man for me to get married with.’
‘Ah, good, and I thought we were going to return home and see uncle again,’ Elsie breathed with a relief. ‘Do not worry, Meg, everything will turn out just great. Whit’s fur ye’ll no go by ye!’
‘Whit’s fur ye’ll no go by ye!’ I repeat, smiling at my sister. She always knows how to make me smile again.
I try to feel calmer, even though inside I feel disappointed and sad. Apparently she was not destined to be his wife and I will have to settle for another husband. Another man who might not give me butterflies every time I see him.
‘Now what are we going to do?’ Elsie asks cheerfully. ‘I suggest that we go and make friends with all the people who are in the castle. We are going to stay here, after all, MacKinnon clan members I think they are good people.’
I love the idea, so we get out of the dining-room and walk down the hallway. As we only know Forba and Anabel, we decide to start with them. We find them in the end of the hallway on the second floor of the castle.
