By the time we finally collapse into bed, there’s no doubt in my mind: it’s time.

“I have something to tell you,” I say.

“You like it?” Nolan says, rolling over to face me.

“Does that really need to be said?” I say, with a little laugh.

“First, though, can I show you something?” he asks, taking my hand.

By now, it’s night outside, although not so dark that I can’t see the path of rose petals Nolan’s leading me down.

“Nolan, what?” I ask.

“You’ll see,” is all he says.

And I do. There in the center of the gardens, by candlelight, Nolan gets down on one knee. “When I met you, Sierra, I didn’t know what love is. I didn’t think that relationships were worth it. I didn’t think my girl was out there. But then I met you. I… I’m usually good with words, but I don’t know how to make you get it. That I want to spend the rest of my life with you. That there’s nothing funny about it. I love you, Sierra. Will you be my wife?”

This time, I don’t need to even pause to think. I take his hand and squeeze it. “Yes, of course yes! But…”

I get down on one knee. Nolan goggles at me. “This isn’t how the proposal is supposed to go.”

“You’ll see,” is all I say.

“Nolan,” I ask, cutting to the chase. “Will you be the father of our child?”

A smile jumps onto his face. “You want to get pregnant?”

A smile jumps onto mine. “Guess again.”

“You are pregnant,” he corrects, and I nod.

He laughs, an overjoyed full-bellied sound, leaning over to hug me. “Thank God for you.”

“Thank God for you,” I say, right before our lips meet.
