I had to put the blame where it was due.

“That’s right. It wasn’t my fault.” Eli jabbed a finger toward Samael. “It was his fault!”

“This is all going according to plan,” Samael said calmly.

Was he insane? How was this part of the plan? Cosette was heartbroken and I was dead.

“You had to die.”

I stood from my chair. Finally someone was giving me some answers. “Why?”

“To cut your lunar tie, you have to be dead. Once you’re dead, I can snip the little thread that kept you bound to the Lunar Court. No fey will ever be able to turn you into a slave now.”

At this point, I was wondering if he had any feelings at all. Or maybe he was stupid because—

“I’m not stupid.”

“What are you then? Because it doesn’t matter that I can’t be a slave anymore. I’m dead.”

Samael’s wings fluttered behind him as he stood. “You had to die so that I could cut your tie, but now, you’re going back.”

“What do you mean going back?” Eli stepped closer to Samael, and looked ready to kick some ass, and at this point, I was pretty sure I’d enjoy watching.

“He’s going back, Elilaios. Calm down.”

Eli’s hands tightened into fists, and I knew this was about to get ugly. I’d kill for some popcorn right now.

“His body burned, Sam. He can’t go back.”

Wait. What? “I burned? How?”

“No. His body is just fine.” Samael snapped his fingers and the table was back, but bigger, and it had my body lying on top of it.

“Jesus.” I stumbled backwards, trying to get away from my dead body.

“Not Jesus. This is you. Christopher Matthews.”

Obviously. “I know.” My body looked fine. Normal. No stab wound from Ziriel’s sword. Even the hole in my clothes and the blood were gone.

Looking at my body was really, really weird. I turned to Eli, just so I didn’t have to see it anymore. “Is he always so literal?”

“Yes. It’s why he mostly stays up here.” Eli sighed. “Well, you had me fooled, Sam. You win this round.”

“She’s my daughter. I’m looking out for her.” He looked at me. “Who do you think gave you that push to go back to your land? To build the sanctuary? You’ll both be happy there. She had to wait a long time for you to be born, and now, it’s your job to make her happy. Every day. Don’t let someone else open the boutique in town. It’s one of her dreams, not that she’ll ever bring it up. But you will.”

I nodded, trying to keep up with Samael. “Okay. Yes. She can do whatever she wants.” If I was going back, I’d make that dream come true for her.

“I’ll need your word. In writing.” A contract fell to the table.

It was thicker than the Bible and the writing was tiny. I couldn’t read all of that right now, especially not without a magnifying glass.

“What’s it say?” Not that it mattered. If he was sending me back—and without my lunar tie—then I’d sign whatever he wanted.

“That you’ll love my daughter. Be good to her. Put all her needs first. Protect. Honor. You don’t have to obey, but you have to be respectful of each other. No cheating. Etcetera.”

Etcetera? I wasn’t sure what that meant, and I wasn’t sure I cared. The rest of it was already my goal.

But I didn’t need to hand over my soul or do his bidding?
