“This is my land,” Chris said. “But where did all these buildings come from?”

“No.” I looked around. It couldn’t be.

So many houses. Some small. Some larger. One really big house—with so many windows. A barn. A large Olympic-size swimming pool. And more off in the distance. They weren’t here ten days ago. It was too quick for all this to be built. “We were just here. How is this possible?”

“Archons are creators. The visionaries. They helped God do His work. This is easy for them.” Van shook his head. “It seems to me that your father has finally decided to participate in your life.”

It didn’t make sense. “No.” I closed my eyes. “Eli!”

“Yes, darling.”

I whipped around. “Did my father do this?”

He shoved his hands into the pockets of his jeans. His shirt looked freshly pressed and his hair a perfect wavy mess. The cocky bastard had put me through hell, and he was looking right as rain.

It wasn’t fair.

“You’ll be fine and looking perfect once you eat.” He winked at me. “And we all chipped in on this one.”

I wasn’t sure how to feel about that. I was dealing with all the archons now. Not just Eli. Or my father. But all of them? “Why?”

“Relax, cousin. This is all part of the plan.”

“Just because you’re an archon and my father’s an archon, doesn’t make you my cousin!”

“So, I should be your uncle?”

He was really starting to annoy me.

“You know that you’re really a pleasure to annoy.”

I hung my head, hoping for patience to show up. “What plan? Did you know that Chris was going to die?”

“No. It’s hard to know all of the plans. Some I oversee. Some are more your father’s thing. We split duties. All I knew was that Chris was supposed to be here, doing this. When he died, I thought something…” He took a breath. “Sometimes it’s hard to see what God intends, but apparently Chris had to die for Samael to cut the lunar tie, but he brought Chris back. As only the Archangel of Death could do.”

There was one thing that I felt bad about. “Did Ziriel know what would happen? That Chris would come back?” Because if he did, then he’d helped me. And in return, I’d attempted to destroy his court. That wasn’t right.

“No. Ziriel only knew that cutting the tie meant death. Not that Chris would come back. He was more djinn than not. Don’t let what you did while grieving keep you up at night. I can absolve you of that much.”

At least that was something. “Is my father…” I took a breath. “Will he come speak to me?”

Eli shook his head. “He likes to stay up there.” He pointed to the sky. “He’s not the best conversationalist.”

Chris pulled me into his side. “He’s really not.”

“See, you didn’t know how lucky you were to deal with me. I’m the best archon.” Eli gave me a big grin and I wanted to hit him.

“What did my father mean about him having plans for me?”

Eli turned his head as if he were listening to something. “Ah. Can’t talk now. I’ve got to run, but expect some company over the course of the next few weeks. I decided to give you some time to honeymoon. We’ve already got Wilken and Gurhan with us. A few others from your court. More are coming in the next couple of days, so get that bond cemented already, you two crazy lovebirds.”

And with that, he was gone.

I looked up at Chris. “What just happened?”

“I don’t know, but we’ve got to get you out of that dress.” I wasn’t sure if Chris meant because it was ugly or if he was thinking sexy thoughts.

He raised an eyebrow at me. Sexy thoughts.
