“Yes, it’s truly terrible, Coco,” Van put in.

“Don’t call me that,” I said. “You know I hate it.” But I didn’t face him. All I could see was Chris. “Hi.”

“Hi. With all these waves of ruffles and sparkles, you look like a starlit ocean.”

An hour ago I’d wanted either death or revenge, and now I had everything I ever wanted. It seemed way too good to be true, and I knew it’d be a while before I’d stop worrying about something coming to ruin it.

But for now, I glanced down at myself and laughed. “I guess I do kind of look like a starlit ocean.”

He lifted me up, and I tried to wrap my legs around his waist, but the dress was too big.

“Want to check if there’s a bed in that massive house?” I asked, before pressing my lips to his.

“We don’t need a bed or a house to do what I want to do to you,” he said, his lips brushing against mine with his words.

He started to set me down, but I shook my head. “It’s too cold for that, Mr. Werewolf who never gets cold.”

Van cleared his throat. “I’m leaving before this gets any more awkward, but when I come back, I’ll have company with me.”

I glanced over my shoulder at him.

“Fine. But don’t come back for ten days.”

“Three.”

“Nine.”

“Seven! Final offer.”

“Fine. Take your week.” Van grinned and then he was gone.

And we were alone and safe and free.

Chris lowered me to the ground and we stumble-walked-kissed to the big house. It was warm inside, and we didn’t make it much past the doorway.

“Care if I rip it?”

I shook my head. “It’s hideous. Do it.”

The sound of the silk ripping filled the air, and then his hands were on my skin and my hands were on him. His lips touched mine and there was nothing but us. But our love. But the feel of him inside me.

And when he bit me, I didn’t care. And when he offered me his blood and said the words, magic filled every part of my body. Every cell to the point where my teeth were tingling and I felt like I was floating—and then I felt it.

The bond.

It was there and made of light and good and laughter, and it was stronger than any red line of fate I’d ever seen.

And when the world snapped back into view, all I could see were Chris’ eyes as his forehead rested on mine.

Hello there, princess. His voice rumbled through the bond and delicious chills ran through my body.

“Whoa,” I said, but then my stomach grumbled.

“Do you think your dad stocked the fridge?”

How should I know? “Do you think there’s even a fridge? Or clothes? Because I don’t think this dress is going to work anymore.”

“Only one way to check about the fridge. But I don’t think we’ll be needing any clothes for a while. Do you?”
