I sat up just enough to rest my chin on his chest. “Try me.”

“Okay.” He opened his mouth, but then his eyes flashed electric blue, and he slid out from under me. In one second he transformed into a big, blond wolf.

What in the—

And then I sensed them. The magic tingling on my skin, urging me to stay calm. Stay still. Stay easy to kill.

I jumped up from the bed, and twin flaming blades appeared, one in each of my hands. Three men were there but Chris was already fighting. I moved to stab one, but he disappeared in a puff of smoke.

Damn it. A third attempt from Gales? We had to leave.

But first, they were going to remember how I’d killed so many of them before. Gales’ fey could disappear in a puff of smoke, and that touch of invisibility made so many of them think they were invisible. But they were all predictable.

I waited for a count of three, and raised the blades high. I quickly swiped down, crossing my hands in front of my body. I felt the thickness of flesh as I moved, and then a thump.

A man fell at my feet.

“Cosette?” Van’s voice called through the door. “I don’t want to ask, but was that just…”

When I turned, Chris had already taken care of the other two.

Oh, God. He thought the fight sounds were… “No! Assassins. One second. We need to get dressed, and then we’ll need three bodies cleaned up.”

The door started to slide open, and I grabbed a sheet from the bed.

“Gales,” he said as he stepped through the door.

I guessed the assassins could’ve been from any court, but couldn’t he have given me a minute?

He checked the bodies quickly, and then rose. “Okay. I’ll need to grab Ziriel. We need to talk to him about all of this, and we should probably leave soon.”

As always, Van and I were on the same page. “Just give me a few minutes before you grab him. I’d like to be dressed before I have any more visitors.”

Van nodded. “I’ll wait until you’re ready, but I’ll move the bodies outside.”

“Good.”

Van waved his hand through the air, and the bodies clunked into a pile in the hallway.

He slid the door closed as he left.

Chris’ wolf prowled around the room, checking for intruders, but they would be invisible. I closed my eyes and sent my magic out, testing the room.

I felt nothing, but I’d felt nothing before the attack, too.

Chris shifted back. “You okay?”

I nodded. “That was quick.”

“These fey seem lazy, but I have a feeling we should get dressed. That was a little too easy.”

I let the blades go back to wherever they went, thanking them for their swift help, before stepping off the bed. “Well, that was something.”

“I thought it was more than something.” Chris ogled me in the stupidest way.

I couldn’t help but laugh. “Put some clothes on.” I told him because if I wasn’t careful, I was going to ogle him back.

“Okay, but I’m kind of hoping you won’t.” Chris waggled his eyebrows.
