He extended his hand to her and she took it as they walked into his house. Jimmy Page was waiting inside the door.

“Jimmy,” Kris said with a deep voice as he pointed to the corner. “Crate.”

The big dog walked right over to his over-sized crate and lay down.

“I don’t want him to try to beg you for some of the amazing dinner I made you.”

He guided her to his dining table, which he’d set up for whenever she arrived.

“This is really lovely.” She sat down and touched the silverware. Surprisingly, he had two of everything that matched. “Did you buy these today?”

He laughed. “No, turns out I had a few more place settings than I knew.”

“You know, Grand Canyon had a crew set up everything next door. It was kind of cool for a second that I didn’t have to do anything, but who knows if I’ll be able to find anything. They want me to hire a housekeeper, but that seems weird to me. You don’t have any staff, do you?”

“No, I like taking care of things myself. I feel like it helps me stay balanced.”

He walked into the kitchen and came back moments later with a plate of food steaming from the microwave. He took his place beside her.

“So,” he said, pouring her a glass of water. “We looked at your music, I hope you don’t mind. We saw that all your stuff is copyrighted. Is that legit? Sometimes people just say that.”

“It’s legit. As the resident lawyer of the band, I handled all the legalities. It’s simple enough, but yes, our music is copyrighted.”

“What do you think about us using some of your tunes?

“It’s a great idea, but I don’t own all the songs myself. Some I co-wrote with my band. Mostly Dale Heartnik, our bassist.”

He watched as she dug into her plate of elk steak, potatoes and caramelized onions. “We can work out fair compensation if they’re interested. I’d like it to be enough to get you out of corporate hell.”

She stared at him for a second, then said, “Can you pinch me please so I know I’m not just passed out at my desk.”

Leaning in, he tucked a lock of hair behind her ear. “You’re not dreaming. This is very real. Now eat up. You must be starving.”

She took a bite of her meat and hummed.

“You like?”

“Oh my God, it’s so good. Almost as good as sex.” She slapped her hand over her mouth. “I mean—”

“You need to have better sex.”

“I need a lot of things. Maybe even a new set of parents.”

“You can change your situation.”

“I know. I have to be honest with them.” She cut another bite. “I never have been.”

“Me living here in the suburbs where I grew up—that’s being honest. Makes me so damn happy.” He reached over and forked her bite and fed it to her.

Her face brightened.

She chewed and swallowed. “I can’t believe I met you, the epitome of ‘being true to yourself,’ at the very moment I’m betraying myself big time. It’s like a—”

“A sign?” he asked her plainly. “A big message? Do you know how sad it would be to shelve your talent?”

She flashed one of her amazing smiles, like he had lifted a big stone off her and she could move and breathe again. On impulse, she leaned over and kissed him. It was a quick kiss. She pulled back and studied him with surprise. They moved toward one another again with sensual, deliberate slowness.

Kris wanted to devour her. He paced himself. He pressed his lips to hers, sweeping his tongue inside of her mouth, tasting her. She was every bit as sweet as he imagined her to be. His fingers raked her silken strands as he made love to her mouth.
