I shivered a little and said, “I wonder who they sent to my house.”

Carter shrugged. “They have a lot of people working for them, so it could have been anyone.”

“If that’s really what happened, then they know where you live,” Tinder said, as he and August joined us. “That means you can’t go home, Mateo, not until we deal with the brothers once and for all.”

I turned to Griffin and Ari and asked, “Did they already tell you about the brothers?”

“Yeah, two super-powerful demons with more fire power than all of us combined. That sucks.” Griffin knit his brows and said, “You know what I just realized? I sent Tinder and August to the house to check on you. If the brothers are monitoring that location, how long will it be before they track them to this place?”

The vampires glanced at each other, and August said, “We should relocate, just to be on the safe side. I’m going to pack a few things. Let’s all be ready to go in five minutes. I’ll let Desiree know what we’re doing.”

Tinder followed him inside, and I turned to Elias. He read the worry in my eyes and wrapped his arms around me as he said, “I’m so sorry for bringing this down on you and your friends.”

I stretched up to kiss him before saying, “It’s not your fault.”

A few minutes later, we all gathered in the garage, and August said, “We’ll take my brother Laurence’s SUV, because it’s big enough to hold all of us. He and his partner are out of the country, so they won’t miss it. Tinder and Mateo’s cars both stand out, so we should keep them hidden for now.”

Desiree said, “I need to borrow a car. I’m heading back to L.A., so I can monitor what the brothers are up to.”

Carter asked, “Are you sure it’s safe?”

“Of course. My entire network is underground, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned to do over the last three hundred years, it’s fly under the radar.” She shot us a look and added, “I know what you’re thinking, and you’re right. I look damn good for three hundred.”

Carter turned to us and said, “I’m not sure if I should stay with you or return to L.A. I’m pretty confident the new spells I cast will keep me hidden from the brothers, though I was wrong about that once, and they managed to track me all the way to the east coast.”

“It’s up to you,” Elias said, “but I’d feel better if you were with us. If they do track us down somehow, you’ll be able to defend us. Assuming both brothers don’t come for us at once.”

“Then it’s decided. I’ll come with you.” Carter and Desiree said their goodbyes, and August handed her the keys to a black Range Rover. She gave us a single nod before speeding off into the night.

I turned to Griffin and Ari and said, “You two would probably be safer on your own. The brothers think you’re in France, because that’s what I told whoever came to the house. It would be best not to attract their attention.”

Ari shook his head and told me, “We’re all going to stick together.” That was the end of the discussion, as far as he and his husband were concerned.

Griffin moved their luggage to the back of the SUV and pulled their car into the garage, and we all climbed into the huge Mercedes-Benz. August slid behind the wheel with Tinder riding shotgun and started the engine. Once he rolled out of the garage, the doors closed behind us, and a faint flash of light told me their wards had engaged.

When we reached the coast highway, August headed north. As we settled in, Carter chatted with Griffin and Ari in the middle row of seats, and Elias and I curled up together in the third row.

After a while, I took my phone from my pocket and sent a text. When I frowned at the reply I got a minute later, Elias asked, “What’s wrong?”

“I messaged Logan—the real one—to ask what happened on Friday night. He had no idea who I was or what I was talking about. That must mean the imposter intercepted him and wiped his memory before he could show up for our date, then took his place.”

Griffin muttered, “That’s really sinister.”

“It is. I wonder if I’ll ever know who he was. He even tried to kiss me at one point, and I’m so fucking glad I didn’t let him.” I paused for a few moments, playing the evening back in my mind before saying, “It’s eerie that I remember our entire date, but his face just won’t come into focus.”

“I’m just so grateful he didn’t hurt you, whoever he was,” Elias said, as he wrapped his arms around me.
