She shrugs. “Well, there are a few promising ones, like Donovan and O’Shea and Clark, not Clarkson.”

I commit the names to memory.

“Oh, and…”

She doesn’t finish because the sound of metal hitting the floor clangs through the air. I get out of my seat and see a puddle of coffee on the floor around a red tumbler. As I pull my gaze up, my eyes meet a pair of wide, blue ones.

My eyebrows furrow.

Ellis?

Chapter 3 ~ No Scrubs

Ellis

Rainier?

I stare at him with eyebrows arched. My arms hang at my sides. I feel like all the blood has been drained from my face, from my limbs, from my whole body, all rushing to my heart, which feels like it’s about to explode from my chest at any second.

It is Rainier. Those dark brown eyes are the same pools of melted chocolate I gazed into in between the most incredible kisses I’ve ever had. Those jet black curls are the same ones I tugged on while he… well, I don’t want to remember that right now.

My point is, it’s Rainier, the same man I had Thanksgiving dinner and even more delicious sex with, except now he looks like a doctor, with the white coat and the black scrubs underneath. Does this mean…?

“Smithson,” Dr. Carver’s voice jolts me out of my near panic attack. “Should I order a crash cart?”

“N-no.”

She sighs. “I know Dr. Knight is a gorgeous male specimen, but try not to get a stroke, okay?”

Dr. Knight? So he is a doctor. Wait, Knight? As In Knight Medical Center, the name of this hospital?

“I’m Dr. Knight.” He goes around the corner to offer me his hand. “Neuro.”

At this hospital?

“I thought Dr. Royce was head of Neuro,” I say.

“He is,” Rainier answers. “I can’t be because I’m usually away performing complex surgeries in other hospitals… but I perform most of my surgeries here. This is like… my base.”

“This is his hospital,” Dr. Carver interjects. “And I mean he owns most of it.”

So that’s why his name is outside the building and on every white coat. Why am I learning all this just now? Damn it. I should have asked for his last name.

“Which means you better not act like a fool in front of him,” Dr. Carver adds. “Starting now. Are you going to clean that mess up, Smithson, or not?”

She glances at the puddle in front of me. I didn’t know it was there.

Right. I was so shocked at seeing Rainier again that I dropped my coffee tumbler.

I pick it up now and try to clean up the puddle with several wads of tissue.

“Let maintenance take care of it,” Rainier says. “If you’re on my service, I need you to check on my patient and get ready to scrub in.”

I look up. Really? Wait. Me and Rainier in the OR together? Is that a good idea?

“Here.” Rainier hands me a tablet.

How can he act like nothing happened between us? He hasn’t forgotten about me, has he? Didn’t he say he had a good memory? Duh. He’s a brain surgeon.

“Sure you want to do that?” Dr. Carver asks Rainier. “Smithson’s one of the good ones, but she doesn’t seem like herself today.”

She looks at me from head to toe.

“Care to tell me why?”

“She’s probably still thinking of Thanksgiving,” Rainier says. “Isn’t that right, Smithson?”

I open my mouth but no words come out. How am I supposed to answer that?

“What? Did you decide to hang out with the other interns and have some fun?” Dr. Carver asks me.

“No. I…”

“Did you drink like I told you to?”

I glance at Rainier, who’s touching his chin. Now he knows which doctor I was talking about last night.

“A little,” I answer.

“So you’ve got a hangover?” Dr. Carver asks me.

“No. I barely – ”

“Did you get laid?”

I stiffen. I knew that question was coming. Still, now that she’s actually asked, I can’t bring myself to answer.

“Wow.” Dr. Carver takes my silence as a yes. “I’m impressed, Smithson. Tell me, how was his dick?”

I clutch the tablet to my chest as I cough, choking on my own saliva.

“That big, huh?”

In spite of myself, my eyes wander to Rainier’s crotch as I try to catch my breath. I didn’t really see it, but it must have been big or I wouldn’t be this sore.

“Dr. Carver, this is hardly appropriate,” Rainier scolds her.

“Sorry.” Dr. Carver wipes the smile off her face. “I’m just thrilled Smithson here is no longer a virgin.”

Rainier looks at me like I did something wrong. What? Does he think that was a crime, too?

Rainier clears his throat. “Anyway, Smithson, why don’t you go check on the patient?”

“Good idea,” Dr. Carver agrees. “That way, you can stop checking out Dr. Knight.”

She noticed? “I wasn’t…”

She steps forward. “Now, I know you know how amazing sex is now, but let me remind you, Smithson, attending physicians are off limits to interns.”
