What the hell?

She sounded flustered and worried.

“Is everything okay?” I asked as I entered the code for the garage.

“Listen, I don’t know what happened. I heard from one of the Antenatal lot that she and Sam had a run in.”

I parked in my spot and pressed the start/stop button to kill the engine.

“A run in?”

“What it is, we had a bit of a rough one and she wasn’t in the greatest headspace, but she was fine. So, I don’t know how she ended up breaking Doctor Sterling’s nose. Everyone is talking about it.”

She did what?

“What do you mean she broke Sam’s nose?”

“Apparently she just decked her in the middle of the ward. The nurse that told me said that he didn’t even see it coming. I’ve tried her phone but she’s not answering. I thought that maybe she was with you and…”

“I’ve only just got home, I’m still in the car. I haven’t seen her or heard from her today. I thought that she might still be in theatre.”

I’d never known Quincy to get physically aggressive. She was the least confrontational person I’d ever come across.

She’d seemed so happy when she left for work yesterday afternoon. We’d had a good day. I knew she was still processing the moving in thing, but she was chirpy.

That alone told me that something had happened, and considering she was in Antenatal, it had to have something to do with Jenna.

Quincy had been anxious every time I’d mentioned Jenna since I’d left them in the hospital room. I knew it’d been a bad idea leaving the three of them alone—my ex-wife, my girlfriend and her ex-husband’s bit on the side.

“Listen, Beth, I need to go. If you hear anything let me know.”

“Yeah, alright. Listen though, can you send me a text or something just so I know she’s okay?”

“Sure.”

“Thanks, Jamie. I hope she’s fine.”

“Me too. Thanks for calling. Bye, Beth.”

“Bye.” She ended the call.

She sounded genuinely concerned and I was beginning to worry about why Quincy hadn’t tried to call me.

I held down the call button until my phone asked for instruction.

“Call Quincy iPhone.”

I drummed my fingers on the supple black leather of my steering wheel. Something felt off. I should’ve told her to step back and forget about it until she was needed. If she was needed.

The loud ringing was making me feel anxious the longer it went on.

Come on, baby, pick up the phone.

I was about to hang up and retry when she answered. She didn’t say anything. The only sound coming from my speakers was the breeze wherever she was.

“Quincy? Hello?”

“Hey.” She replied. Her voice was low and barely audible over the bluster of the wind.
