And with that, the smallest part of Maya I left living inside me had gone.

CHAPTER 31

BEATRICE

Expectations.

That’s what shapes our lives. How we all live up to others’ expectations.

The truth is nobody cares.

That what happened with us.

It’d been a week since I returned from Florence. I had to admit, there was a part of me that was afraid of being noticed, but nobody cared when people saw me on Zeke’s arm. No one asked questions when he introduced me as Beatrice, his girlfriend. Everyone forgot the girl named Maya. No one recognized me even in his apartment building.

I couldn’t blame them, though.

Even I didn’t recognize myself.

I wasn’t the girl with sad eyes. My body wasn’t malnourished. My skin wasn’t pale or unhealthy. And I wasn’t a little girl anymore.

The reflection in the mirror was a vision of a polished woman. Her dark eyes were blazing with the fire in her soul. Her skin was smooth as cream and glowing. And her body had curves it didn’t have before.

I smiled.

Maya used to be like coal. Shapeless. Black. Worthless.

Beatrice was a diamond. Bright and cut to a unique shape under pressure and fire. Worthy of love. Beatrice was the proof that women could be transformed by the things they endured.

I smiled bigger, stood straighter as I looked at my reflection once more before leaving the bedroom I shared with Zeke. He was standing in front of the floor to ceiling windows of the living room in his black suit. I leaned against the wall and watched him for a while.

It was still hard to believe my first, and only dream came true, and I have a life I shared with him. A future awaited us.

I didn’t know a time I didn’t love him. Didn’t know a time when I didn’t dream a future with him. There had never been anyone else for me. Never. Not before or after he left me.

Love meant having him in my world.

“Don’t you plan on joining me?” his voice brought me to the moment.

With Zeke by my side, I had never wanted to leave the moment I was in. I loved my life. I loved living in the present. With him. In his arms.

“I like the view from here,” I said, letting my eyes roam over his body shamelessly.

A smirk appeared on his handsome face as he strolled toward me. My whole body shivered when he moved his hands from my shoulders to my hips. He leaned down close to my ear.

“You’re right. I like the view,” he whispered, placing a kiss on my neck.

I moaned. With one touch from him, my body turned into a puddle. There was a switch in me, and the controller was only in his hands. Rising on my toes, I pressed my body against his and held on tight to his shoulders for balance when he grabbed my ass.

“Let's go before I change my mind,” I said.

It was the time for Beatrice to enter the Inferno.

CHAPTER 32

ZEKE

A rush.
