“I’m stuck next to an enormous tree trunk.”

“Stay there, keep the bond open, and we will find you. Please, for me, keep it open.”

“Niko!” I ran up to him. “She just responded to me. She found Molly, and I told her to stay put, and we would find her.”

His face scrunched up, frustration flashing in his eyes. I assumed he was trying to contact Amelia himself. “Damnit,” he muttered.

“What?” I leaned toward him, wanting to know what she said.

“Nothing, she threw that damn mental block back up.” He looked around at everyone and moved his fist in a circle above his head before announcing, “Let’s go.”

We moved to the open field just outside the compound walls.

“All right, everyone has their instructions. Trust your trackers and remember to keep in contact every fifteen minutes.” Those chosen as trackers shifted. Jonah turned and followed their tracker, his team following into the jungle, stepping back right before they entered, letting their tracker take the lead.

I was happy to have Tito as ours. If anyone would find Molly, and in turn Amelia, it would be Molly’s Uncle Tito. He shifted and took off into the woods; Niko and I fast on his trail.

“Don’t worry about the map.”His voice echoed in my head. “I’ll find them. You just keep up.”

He yipped in his wolf form.

“Smartass,” Niko grumbled.

“Maybe, but he knows Molly’s scent inside and out. I agree. Let’s follow his nose.”

“Lead the way, Scooby.” Niko’s sarcasm was a welcomed response. “There’ll be a Scooby snack for you at the end.”

Tito stopped on a dime, swiveled toward us, and sat down. He yipped three times. I wasn’t sure what he meant, but Niko responded as if he spoke wolf.

“Fine, fine, three Scooby snacks.” Niko’s face lit up with his smile; whatever little joke he had made lightened the mood just a bit.

Tito yipped one more time, turned, and took off again.

“I’m not sure what just happened, but seeing you smile is the best thing that has happened to me today.”

“Oh, stop with your mushy talk and keep up. We need to find the girls, bring them home, and never let them out of our sight again.”

“Agreed!” I jogged beside him as we followed Tito further into the darkness. After hours of searching, I tried to contact Amelia again.

“Hurry, Molly is hiding behind me, and I swear I just saw Jeff Sandoval a few feet away from me.” I heard the tears in her voice.

“Baby, he’s still in jail.”

“I know he is supposed to be, but I’ll never forget that face or that scent.”

“Okay, baby, stay hidden with Molly and keep the bond open. If you put up another block, it will take us longer to find you. Please, for me, keep it open.”

Amelia didn’t respond, but I didn’t feel her mental block go back up, so I took that as a good sign. I shared with Niko and Tito what little I got from her. Tito perked up and headed down a barely-there path, nose plastered to the ground.

“He’s got their scent.” Niko took off, and I followed close on his heels.
