His stupidly handsome smirk drifts higher at my childish behavior. I notice his full hands—a white paper bag in one and a drink carrier in the other. “I come bearing gifts.”

My stomach chooses that exact moment to let out a growl resembling a rabid dog, giving away any chance I had at refusal.

“You must have read the baby book. That, or you’re just a god at predicting my needs.”

Seemingly comfortable that I’m not about to ream his ass, Nathan shoulders past me and saunters to my kitchen as if he owns the place. I don’t squander the opportunity to admire his backside in a pair of well-fitting denim jeans.

“I’ve known you long enough to know that even when you’re not pregnant, your love language is food.”

I startle from my PG-13 daydream, and the smirk on his face tells me he definitely caught me staring. Scowling again in his direction, I close my front door and join him in the kitchen.

“Especially for this,” he continues and lifts the white cardboard box from the bag. The mix of cumin, paprika, garlic, and chili powder, along with whatever secrets they use to make magical loaded nachos, nearly makes me drool.

A fork clatters in my direction across the counter, and Nathan flips the lid to reveal the mouthwatering concoction.

“Bon appetite, baby.”

“Ugh, I can’t even be mad at you for showing up unannounced when you feed me like this.” I grab the biggest, most loaded chip I can find, making sure it has a little bit of everything before shoving it into my mouth.

He raises an eyebrow. “Why would you be mad? I’ve shown up at your house a hundred times.”

I push away from the counter to retrieve two cold bottles of water from my fridge. After extending one to Nathan, which he accepts, I untwist my cap and take a refreshing drink.

“Because now I’m pregnant, and I spend most my time at home looking like a toddler, wearing tee shirts that show my belly and have food dribbled across my chest, and hair I can’t bother to brush.”

He lowers his water bottle slowly and looks at me as if I’ve sprouted an extra head.

“You look beautiful.”

A hunk of chip flies into the back of my throat with my snort. My body’s response is to cough to dislodge it, and I sound like I’m trying to hock a loogie as the chip flies straight out of my mouth onto the laminate countertop. I discreetly wipe it away with my forearm.

“Stop. You don’t have to lie to keep things smooth between us. We’re good already.”

He pops another loaded chip in his mouth and looks a million times better than I did while doing it.

“I’m not. You’ve always turned heads. I know we aren’t involved romantically, but you carrying my baby with that little growing bump makes you even sexier.”

My stomach instantly bottoms out and then clenches almost painfully. “Do you really think that?”

“Would I say it if I didn’t mean it?”

I shrug. “Maybe. We’ve had more drama in the past several months than we’ve had our entire friendship. You could definitely be trying to spare me.”

Nathan brushes chip dust off his fingers over my sink, then leans back against it. “Fair enough. If I said I’ve been hiding a chub since I saw your ass bent over in the fridge, would you believe me then?”

My gaze drops to his crotch. Checks out. “I guess.”

He barks out a laugh.

“Are you sure? You can cop a feel if you’d like.”

My libido does acrobatic moves. “We both know that would lead to places we shouldn’t go.”

“Shouldn’t we?” he asks in a husky, deep voice.

Eeek! “Who are you, and what have you done with Nice Guy Nate?”

His eyes darken with promise, and he takes a step forward. “I’m a guy.” Step. “Whose options include.” Another step. “His right hand.” The final step brings him close, toes kissing below us, and we lock eyes. “And you.”
