“How?”

“I’ll follow you to Evie’s right now. That way, if anything happens, you can pull over, and I’ll be right there.”

Frustration intensifies her grunt. “I can’t have you babysitting me. Dammit, I brought you one child, not two!”

The eruption provokes a small chuckle from me. “I don’t see it that way.”

“I don’t want to be a burden.”

“You’re easy to care for, and this is temporary. But the sooner you start driving again, the easier it’ll be. If you wait too long, you’ll take twice the time to recover.”

Caiti dashes the tears from her cheeks with the back of her hand. “You’ll stay right behind me the whole way?”

“I promise.”

She moves her gaze to the windshield. “And when they ask what you’re doing there?”

“Leave that to me.” The most assuring thing I can think of is grounded in trust, and I can tell she’s having a hard time believing me. I never said I was good at this, but I’m more than willing.

“Okay. Okay, fine.” She twists the key in her ignition and squeezes her eyes shut as the engine roars to life.

“You’ll need those open to see the road,” I joke to lighten the air. At the provocation she turns a devastatingly sexy glare on me. But then she blinks and turns up the corners of her lips.

“Thank you,” she murmurs.

“I’ll be right behind you,” I answer.

Petite fingers snatch my wrist as I turn to go. “Give me a five-second head start.”

I bite down the praise I want to give her and instead reply with, “Got it.”

I punch out a concise text to Evie as I walk back to my truck, simply saying we’re on the way. She can ask or assume whatever she wants, but I’ve stepped into Caiti’s privacy enough. Telling her sister-in-law the truth is her decision, not mine.

Once my engine roars to life, I catch her eyes in the rearview of her car. My fingers dance from the top of my steering wheel in a gesture to go ahead.

Loose gravel at the curb crunches as she pulls away, and I give the necessary five-second countdown in my head before mimicking the motion.
