“Law and I got married at the courthouse and never looked back.” Cami saves me from further expanding on my own nuptials.

“What are the two of you talking about over here?” Kiersten joins our twosome in a sea of fabric and tulle.

“What style to pick.” Cami spares me once again.

Kiersten draws out a dress with thin straps, short length, and a slit to mid-thigh in a vivid cerulean. “Access over everything.”

“I like that idea.” Cami’s devilish grin spreads. She holds up a strapless flowy dress in baby blue. A thin sash hangs from the waist. “Your turn.”

“Oh, I don’t need access to anything.” Might as well lock me in a chastity belt.

Kiersten frowns. “Maybe not, but you deserve to feel sexy.”

“What about this?” Evelyn, eavesdropping on our conversation, crosses from a diagonal rack carrying a handful of steel blue fabric. She lifts the hanger overhead and lets the material cascade toward the floor.

The sheath dress has thick straps and a V-neck, ruching around the stomach that wraps to a side bow, and a thigh-high slit in the front. The dress is sexy, all right. Maybe a little too much for a single mother widow.

“Try it on!” The girls cajole.

Before I can protest, the dress is shoved in my arms, and I’m pushed into a changing room.

Excited chatter floats from the stalls surrounding me. The material feels nice against my skin, slipping perfectly over my curves to sit in place like a glove. My admiration in the mirror lingers well past acceptable. I can’t remember the last time I wore a pretty gown or dressed up at all. The reflection before me is nearly unrecognizable.

“Come out, Caiti, and show us.” That voice belongs to Evie. The last thing I want to do is disappoint her, so I pull up my figurative big girl panties and unlatch the door.

“Yep, that’s the one,” Evie declares loudly. “No arguments allowed.”

“You won’t get one from me.” I shrug one shoulder. “I love it.”

Evie’s phone snags her attention. “I’ve been ordered to tell you to head to Dane’s when you’re finished. Also to give him your damn number so he can stop using me as a middle man. I added that last part myself.” She drops the device in her purse and grins.

Nerves ratchet at the sudden change of plans. “I suppose I should go.”

“I’ll go with you. Rhett’s waiting for me there.”

Once I shuffle into the changing room and shuck the gown, I breathe a sigh of relief in solitude. I should be able to conquer driving a few blocks with Evie in the car. It’s what awaits me when I get there that has my heart beating faster.
