MEGHAN

Ajolt of electricity shoots down my spine as Julian’s fingers gently stroke my skin. Memories of those fingers caressing other parts of my body make my skin heat and my thighs clench.

“Penny for your thoughts, little one?” His husky voice breaks the spell.

“Little one? I wasn’t so little to you when you were fucking me against every available surface,” I huff and pull from his grasp.

I turn to head back toward the party but am suddenly lifted over his shoulder again.

“That’s what you are to me, Megs. My little one. And it seems you’ve forgotten,” he growls as he places two more quick slaps across my ass.

The unexpected pleasure makes me gasp.

“Seems my little one might enjoy her punishment after all.”

“Punishment for what? I’ve done nothing wrong. Now, put me down and stop treating me like a damn child.”

I squirm to relieve some of the ache in my core. I will not admit I enjoyed his little display of dominance. It’s one thing to have a little fun in the bedroom, but it’s a whole different situation to treat me like a child in public.

“Squirm all you want, Meghan. I’m not putting you down until we are inside my flat. It’s time for you to learn your lesson, one I should have taught you when I first discovered your lies.”

Julian strides toward his place as if I weigh nothing. He carries me inside and up the stairs, taking them two at a time until he reaches the front door of his apartment. The door opens effortlessly as we enter.

“I know you’re not used to having to lock your door at night, but this isn’t the safest area,” I get out before Julian throws me down on the couch.

“My only intention when I left was a quick run. I didn’t know there was a naughty little girl waiting for me to come punish her.”

There is a fire in his eyes I’ve never seen before. I’m tempted to push harder, to see if I can get him to break his calm exterior and show me the passion I saw over the summer. But even if he does, the truth will remain: I’m still not good enough.

“You sound like my father.” I roll my eyes. “Although I’m grateful you were there to chase off Captain Douche, I would have eventually handled it myself.”

“I’m well aware you can take care of yourself, but now that I’m here, you don’t have to.” He presses a gentle kiss on my forehead and turns to head toward the kitchen.

I gave this man my heart once before and he broke it into a million pieces. If I let him in again, I’m not sure I’ll survive.

Julian returns and hands me a cold bottle of water.

“Sit up,” he commands gently before sitting beside me.

He holds out his hand, which contains two white pills, and I glance up at him briefly.

“Aspirin,” is all he says.

I swallow down the medicine, but remain quiet. If I tell Julian about my impromptu date, Max, he’ll go nuts. It’s hard for me to admit, but I’m grateful to Julian for swooping in and saving the day.

“Tell me what happened,” he softly urges me.

“There’s really nothing to say,” I lie.

Julian squeezes my thigh, a clear sign demanding honesty.

I sigh. “Fine. I met up with that guy at the party. We’ve had classes together over the years, and when he called to invite me, I went. I didn’t realize Max was such a handsy asshole.”

Julian’s hand tightens on my leg, and I hear him growl under his breath.

“To be fair, we both had way too much to drink. I was trying to forget all about you.”

“Don’t,” Julian barks. “Don’t excuse what he did to you.”
