I wait for her to complain about how much it hurts or ask how much longer she has to be there, but nothing. Not one peep from her.

I go over some paperwork and answer a few emails before I turn toward her, breaking the silence.

“Why is it so important to sleep with me?”

The only response I get is a shrug of her shoulders.

I lean back in my chair, placing my foot on my knee. “There has to be a reason. Something more than everyone knowing I slept with you. I’m flattered, but you risked everything by cheating.”

I wait patiently for an answer, but she says nothing. Just her hazel-colored eyes staring at me with a mixture of pain and relief all mixed together.

“It needs to be you,” Avery finally responds, barely above a whisper. “I know you don’t remember me, but we met a little over two years ago. Ever since that moment, you’ve been the standard every man has had to live up to. The man I see in my dreams.”

“You’ve put me on a pedestal, Avery. I’m no one special. In the end, I’ll just end up disappointing you.” I stand and look at my watch, and noticing the time, I reach my hand out toward her.

“Your time is up. You took your punishment like a good girl. I’m very proud of you. Don’t let me catch you cheating in my class, or any other class, again. The punishment will be much worse.”

Avery grabs my outstretched hand and stands. With the indentation of rice in her knees, she stumbles slightly into my arms. Her legs are probably numb from kneeling for so long.

“Thank you, Da—Samuel. Is it all right if I sit for a few minutes before I head to class?”

Did she almost call me Daddy?

I’m stunned for a moment before I reply.

“Yes. Take all the time you need. I have to run, but lock up before you head out.”

“Of course. I promise to be a good girl from now on.”

I walk behind my desk, grab my bag, and head directly toward the door.

“Goodbye, Avery,” I tell her without looking back.

I don’t wait for a response before closing the door behind me.
