Alec pushes my chair in before walking around to the other side of the table. I follow him with my eyes and notice a bouquet of pink roses sitting on the table.

He seriously thinks this is a date. What have I done?

He takes his seat, reaching to hold the bouquet out to me. “I brought these for you. I hope it isn’t too much, but my mother always taught me to bring flowers to a lady when you take her out.”

“I thought I was the one taking you out to dinner?” I try to hide my confusion with a giggle.

Realizing my discomfort, Alec reaches across the table and grasps my hand. “I’m sorry to spring this on you like this, but ever since I’ve helped you study for the exam, I haven’t been able to get you out of my mind.”

“I’m flattered Alec, but—”

Before I can complete my thought, he interrupts me. “No but. Just have dinner with me. I’m the one that asked you out, after all. If you feel nothing after tonight, then we can go back to the way things were. Okay?”

“Okay.” I give him a reassuring smile. “It’s not that I’m against dating you. I’m just trying to focus on getting through this year. Junior year is always the hardest, right?”

“That’s true. No need to add extra stress.” Alec picks up his menu. “I’ve never eaten here before. Do you have any recommendations?”

I open my mouth to respond before I see the last person I expected sitting directly across the restaurant from us: Samuel and some bimbo.

My blood boils just seeing them together. Suddenly, Samuel looks up and our eyes lock. His delicious smirk spreads across his face.

I know he has no interest in being here, as I haven’t seen him since I caught my first glimpse of him all those weeks ago. He’s here because of me. There’s no doubt in my mind.

I return his smile with one of my own. Two can play at this game, and in the end, I’ll be the one to come out victorious.
