“I won’t take no for an answer. What kind of date would I be if I let you walk home in the dark?”

I bite back the snarky retort floating around in my head about being perfectly capable of walking here in the dark. “Thank you for being so considerate.”

Alec wraps his arm around my shoulder, grabs our to-go boxes off the table, and points me toward Samuel and his not date. “We should go at least say hello to Professor Jacobs. It’d be rude not to.”

I hide my displeasure behind a smile and let him lead the way toward Samuel’s table. Before we even reach the table, I can feel his heated gaze on me once again. I look up just in time to catch him turning his attention toward the woman at his table. Alec and I continue to approach as Samuel leans in and plants a gentle kiss on her lips.

“I guess they really are on a date,” Alec whispers. “Let’s not go over. I don’t want to interrupt them.”

Quickly, we change directions and head toward the door. It only takes about fifteen minutes for Alec and me to arrive back at my sorority house. Luckily for me, everyone is busy.

“I had a great time tonight, Alec. We should really do it again.” I force myself to smile.

It’s not a lie. I had a great time with him. He paid attention when I spoke to him and didn’t send me mixed signals. When I’m with him, I know what I’m getting: all of him.

“I enjoyed tonight as well. Just wish it had ended differently.” He reaches out and grasps my check, brushing his thumb across my cheekbone.

I know what’s coming next, and I try to prepare for it.

Alec leans in and presses a firm kiss on my lips, running his tongue along the seam between my lips. I slightly part my lips, giving him access to my mouth. His hand slides down, wrapping around my neck and tilting my head to get a deep connection.

I wrap my hands around his neck, pulling him closer to me and gently nibbling on his lip before breaking the kiss and taking a step back.

“Go out with me again on Friday.”

His eyes are full of lust for me, but I feel nothing. Nothing like the fire that shoots through my veins with just a simple glance from Samuel Jacobs. Saying no is the right thing to do. I shouldn’t lead him to believe that there could be something more between us.

Instead, I give him a bright smile. “I would love to.”
