Chapter Eight

Derek meant to go home after the café, but his feet stopped at the station instead. Passing the station door, he climbed the metal stairs on the side of the building which led to the upstairs apartment. Hopefully, Adam was home from work by now.

Derek knocked and heard the TV shut off before Adam opened the door.

“Hey man.” He moved aside to let Derek in. “What’s up?”

Derek kicked off his shoes and flopped down onto the brown sofa.

“You want a soda or something?” Adam gestured to the kitchenette.

His chihuahua, Danny Trejo, jumped up on Derek and licked his face. He scratched the dog behind the ear. “Why did she have to come back?”

“I assume we’re talking about Kylie Martin?”

“Yeah.”

“I don’t know. I heard something about her losing her job in the city.”

“So, she comes back after all these years and takes a job away from someone local? Have you talked to her?”

“Not yet, but I picked up a coffee after work this afternoon. She’s…well to be honest she’s gorgeous.” Adam waggled his eyebrows.

“Yeah, she is.” Derek sat back up. “I mean if you notice that kind of thing.”

“Mm-hmm.”

“I mean she looks like a beauty salon exploded, but yeah she’s always been pretty.” He rubbed a hand through his hair. “She’s different though, isn’t she? Kind of fake, maybe? I’ll bet she’s had work done.”

“She hasn’t had work done.” Adam took a swig of his soda.

“How could you tell?”

“When you watch as muchReal Housewivesas I do, you learn to tell who’s had work done and who’s au naturel.”

Derek chucked a cushion at Adam’s face.

Adam sat forward. “Are you still stuck on Kylie?”

“What? No! Dude, that was high school.”

“Plus, she turned you down.”

“She did not turn me down.”

“Oh, I’m sorry. She didn’t talk to you for the rest of the school year. Definitely not a rejection.”

Derek sat up and put Danny Trejo on the floor. “Exactly. She could’ve at least given me a reason instead of pretending I didn’t exist for an entire month.”

Adam called Danny Trejo up to his lap. “I know how much you liked her back then. And it’s probably weird that she’s back in town. But she’s leaving again at some point, right?”

“She said she was.”

“Then stay out of her way until then, if it bugs you that much.”

Derek leaned back on the couch and stared at the ceiling. “She volunteered to help me with the water treatment plant stuff.” He sighed.

“Oh.” Adam broke into snickers. “Well in that case, good luck to you, man.”
