“Yeah?”

“I think your dog is eating a dead fish.”

“What?” She sprang away from him, searching the dark for Captain. Squinting in the dark, her gaze found the little round dog standing paw deep in the water making very loud chewing sounds. “Oh ew!”

She jumped up and ran for Captain who, to his credit, stood his ground until she grabbed his collar, hauling him away from the water. “Ugh. You’re going to need a bath and maybe a toothbrush.”

Derek cracked up.

“Can I walk you two home?” he asked, and her knees almost buckled.

“That would be great.”

Derek stood and taking her hand in his, and they strolled back to Kylie’s house in comfortable silence. Electricity jolted up her arm from where he touched her. He could probably hear her heart thudding against her ribs.

When they got to her front door she reluctantly let go of his hand.

“I’ll see you tomorrow, then?” he asked.

“Of course,” she said.

Derek leaned in, leaving a soft, lingering kiss on her lips, before he stepped back smiling and left.
