She tilted her head in a question. “Okay.”

Where do I start?

“I’m really enjoying spending time with you.” He glanced down at his hands.

“Me too.” She reached over and laid a hand on this arm, and a tingle of electricity shot to his brain.

“But…”

“But I might be leaving soon.” She withdrew her hand.

“Yeah.” He let out a breath. “The thing is, I don’t want to stop seeing you.”

Her eyes shone. “Even though I’m not staying?”

“Maybe it’s foolish, but I don’t think I could stay away if I tried. At least not while you’re in town. If that’s okay with you?”

The corners of her mouth turned up.

He continued, “Just promise me something?”

She nodded.

“Stick around long enough for the fair and maybe give me lots of warning before you head back to the city?”

Her lips broke into a grin. “I can do that.”

He reached across the table and took her hands in his.

“Hey,” she broke their comfortable silence, “did you write your speech yet?”

“Uh…” He scratched the back of his neck.

Kylie swatted his arm. “Derek, the fair is in two days!”

“I know, I know.” He held up his hands. “I’ll do it tonight.”

“You better.” Looking over at the occupied table, she stood. “I should get back to work.”

Derek stood as well. “I’ll see you tomorrow?”

“Well, I definitely won’t be leaving before then. So yes.”
