“Come on.” He ignored his question and picked up Kylie’s clipboard off the grass. “Let’s finish this.”

Two hours later, the bandstand was set up, and everything was done that could be accomplished before the next day. He was tempted to move everything around, but that was childish, and Kylie’s layout made the most sense.

But Derek stewed the entire time. He’d messed up. Shame and guilt fueled the fire of his hurt and anger and eventually Adam told Derek to sit on the bleachers and stop barking at the workers. The sun had long since set, and the field lights cast dreary shadows across the grass. Adam sent the high school students off.

“Come on man.” He clapped Derek on the back. “Let’s go have some beers at my place, and you can explain to me what you said or did that made Kylie ran out of here like her hair was on fire.”

They retreated to his apartment above the station. Settling into Adam’s living room with beers in hand, Derek spilled everything about her new job and how she didn’t tell him. He also told Adam about the time he’d been spending with her and how he thought it meant something to her.

“I have to say, I’m surprised,” Adam said after his story was done and they had a couple more beers. “She doesn’t really seem like the careless type.”

“Yeah.” He scratched Danny Trejo who was curled up on his chest. “Maybe she doesn’t see us as important enough to care.”

“Sorry, man. I’ll go get the harder stuff.”
