“He’s getting so big!” I couldn’t remember the last time I’d see him, but it had been at least a couple months. “How are you, sweet little Crew?” I booped the little boy’s nose with a finger and he smiled at me. I think my heart melted a little bit.

Wren nodded. “He’s going to be crawling soon. I can’t believe it.”

Crew cooed and babbled as he kicked his legs. He was the spitting image of his father; dark wavy hair and beautiful olive skin. But his eyes were all Wren. They were wide and bright and green with a dash of mischief behind them.

“You’re going to have your hands full with that one.” I winked and she rolled her eyes.

“I already do.” She pushed the buggy forward as we walked toward the back counter. “But that doesn’t mean I should be ignoring my friends.” She bit at the corner of her lip.

I shook my head. “I didn’t think you were ignoring me, Wren.”

I couldn’t imagine what it must be like to have a child to take care of. I already had my hands full with my father, but a baby was a whole different set of responsibilities. Plus, she owned her own massage business that was doing really well. We were both busy and though we texted each other almost every day, it was rare we actually got together. I did miss her.

“I’m glad, but I think it’s time we remedy the situation.”

I raised my brows. “Oh really? How might we do that?”

“I have a babysitter Friday night until Atlas gets off work. Do you want to have a wild and crazy girls’ night out with me?” She bounced on the balls of her feet with excitement.

I grabbed her hands with another squeal of delight. It had been so long since I felt normal and I relished it. “Are you kidding me? That sounds amazing! Yes, definitely, definitelyyes.”

Wren squeezed my hands. “Good. It’s a date. I’ve needed some girl time so bad.”

I was horrified by the burning behind my eyes. I fought back the tears that wanted to appear. “Me too. You have no idea how bad I’ve needed something like this.”

Wren sat with me at the counter for a little while, chatting and catching up. But it wasn’t long before the boutique started filling up again and baby Crew got fussy. Even though she had to leave shortly after arriving, seeing her for even a little while had lifted my spirits. We had hammered out a time and place for our Friday adventure. Inside, I was already counting down the hours until I got to see her again.

Friends were important. Especially the ones who stayed with you through the hard times and didn’t up and abandoning you.
