My heart ached for him. “I’m so sorry, Knox.”

He shrugged. “It’s part of life. We’ve been short staffed too since Dawson—” He coughed as if choking on the name, his eyes flashing with anger as he brought up his older brother. “He was always in charge of scheduling the volunteers and hired help. It’s been a big mess, honestly.”

I grabbed his hand again. I wanted to offer to help, but I barely had time to work for my own sister.

“Annabelle has really stepped up though, she’s been planning the whole event.”

“That’s good. Annabelle always was a fighter.”

He nodded. “I appreciate you trying with Ty, Ellie. I know it won’t be easy, but I think it’ll be good. Friends are good.”

A small smile pulled on my lips as I clung to his hand. “Yes,” I said, nodding. “Friends are good. I’m glad you’re mine.”

He grinned and returned his hat to head, looking more like himself. We sat and watched the waterfall, soaking up the beauty. I took off my shoes and dipped my toes into the cool, flowing creek. It reminded me of the creek bed on my father’s property.

Sharing the silence and solace of nature with Knox eased some of the anxiety about trying with Ty. After what had happened last night, how I was going to try and be friends with him again?

Even though it scared me and I saw it as something impossible, I had to push myself. For Knox, because it was the least I could do. I just hoped that attempting to be civil with Ty wouldn’t be something I regretted.

I could be nice to him, but I wouldn’t give him the power to break me any more than he already had.
