“What happened to Mama?”

Atlas squeezed my shoulder so tight and hurt. “She’s gone.” His voice was wobbly and didn’t sound like him.

I shook my head. “No,” I pointed to her bed. “She’s right there.” But even as I said it, I knew he was right. My tummy began to hurt.

Atlas tried to turn me away, but I fought him. “We have to go.”

I shook my head as fresh tears streamed down my face. “But Mama needs me!” I cried. “Mama needs me to help her!”

Atlas wrapped me in his arms, pulling me into his chest. “You can’t help her now. I’m sorry. She’s dead, Ty.”

Dead.Dead.

The word ricocheted inside my skull. You couldn’t save people once they were dead.
