“Ty,” I gasped, panic suddenly overwhelmed me.

He stopped immediately. Pulling back, he looked up into my face. “Ellie?” My name sounded like a question, and I didn’t know how to answer. This was Ty. I knew him as well as I knew myself.

This was all so new, though. Different. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to go there with him…I did. I had never felt this way before, like my limbs were made of jello and my head spun.

But I was also very aware that I wasn’t the first girl Ty had been with like this. He was no stranger to the places we were headed and yet—I was.

My face heated more as he stared up at me, waiting. “I…um…” My chest heaved as I searched for the words I’d never told anyone before. “I mean, I’ve never…I haven’t…”

I looked away, somehow embarrassed by my lack of experience. I had kissed guys before. I’ve even done some things with guys before. But I’d never…gone all the way. It’s not that I had anything against it. It just…scared me. I never found anyone I liked enough to push past that fear.

Ty gently grabbed my chin, turning my gaze back to his. His pupils were round and dark. “Ellie,” he said, every word controlled. “Are you telling me that you’ve never slept with a guy before?”

My cheeks burned. “I just…never found anyone I wanted to sleep with.”

Ty groaned. “Ellie,” he said, his voice tortured. “You’ve never told me…”

“You never asked.”

He took my face between his hands and pressed his lips to my forehead. “I’m so sorry. I would’ve never pushed you—”

“I know,” I said quickly. I didn’t think he had been pushing. If anything, we were both pushing. “I just, I mean…”

He shook his head. “We don’t have to do anything, Ellie.”

Those few simple words had the tight band around my chest loosening. I wasn’t sure why the anxiety hit me all of a sudden, but I was glad he understood. “I’m sorry,” I mumbled, embarrassment lingering.

Ty frowned. “You have nothing to be sorry for. I’m glad you said something.”

“I didn’t exactly mean for us to stop. I…like kissing you.”

He chuckled softly, his small grin making my heart flip. “I adore kissing you.” He touched the tip of his nose to mine. “But I’m glad we stopped, because you drive me a little crazy. Any farther and I don’t know if I would’ve been able to stop.”

My throat tightened at the huskiness in his voice.

“But now isn’t the time, El. Because if we’re going to do this, I don’t want it to be here, in the dark in the middle of a muggy summer night.” He shook his head, his eyes darkening devilishly. “No, I’m going to take my time with you.” He leaned in, his lips skimming across the skin on my cheek. “It’s going to be slow, and perfect, and ideally…” He drew back slightly. “In a bed.”

I think my skin was actually on fire. Everything about him turned my insides to mush. Maybe I didn’t care about my insecurities. Maybe, I was ready, right now. In the next breath I pressed my lips back to his, opening my mouth and deepening our kiss.

He groaned in the back of his throat as he wrapped his arms around me, pulling me tight against him as he twisted his body, shifting us so that my back was on the quilt and he was above me.

He pulled away and stared down at me. “You’re awful,” he teased.

I bit my lip, lifting my head to get closer to him, but he pulled away. He placed a finger on my lips. “As much as I’d love to continue this…” He moved, so he was lying on his side next to me. I think I might have whined. “We should stop.”

“I was joking,” I said quickly. “I’ve had sex before. Lots of times, with lots of guys.”

He narrowed his eyes. “You were never a good liar.”

“Whatever,” I huffed.

Ty ran a hand through my hair, and then dragged his fingers gently down the length of my arm. Pleasant chills rolled down my body as he drew his fingers up again, and then back down, in a soothing motion that instantly calmed the raging fire in my blood.

“Just be with me a little while,” he whispered in my ear. “I’ve missed you, Ellie.”

He continued the hypnotizing motions of gently brushing his fingertips up and down the length of my bare arm. It felt so good, my eyes lulled closed.

“I missed you too, Ty. So much.”

He started humming softly under his breath. The combination of his touch and his song, had me quickly drifting off into an unexpected slumber.
