He sighed. “Something I forgot. If you quicken, you will feel an urge to be safe and protected, so it is a room full of soft fabrics, silky furs, pillows, and just a sensory-calming room.”

She shook because that sounded amazing. “Can I take a vacation there?”

“You will go to pick your textiles tomorrow. I am oddly confident that Litha will be able to keep the assassins from you.”

She chuckled. “I think so, too. I am going to turn in.”

Brit tried to turn and walk down the hall, but he kept his arms around her and lifted her up against him, sniffing her neck.

“You smell amazing, mate.”

She chuckled. “Mistress. Not mate. The contract didn’t have a provision for a mate.”

He growled. “Mate.”

“Mistress or I am in breach of contract.”

Litha looked at them in the hallway, and she snorted. “I will see you in the morning, Brittany.”

“Thanks for coming, Litha. Did you get leave?”

“I did. The new Aksalla branch of Z-Tech is nearly up and running, so Zera let me come to you for a bit. I will ask Vallu where the best places to fabric shop are. We can use one of the Daycross vehicles.”

Litha smiled and walked to her room. “Good evening.”

Brit turned her head to Denier. “She dismissed us.” She was grinning.

“That is true. I am not accustomed to being dismissed.”

Litha’s voice came from her room. “I can come hang out with you if you like.”

Brit grinned and laughed as Denier carried her off to the first bedroom they had been in, and he shut the door. To Brit’s surprise, they curled up together on the bed that the house bots had freshened up. She was warm, cuddled, and she felt treasured, if only for that moment. The only time she had felt more important was the first time Baola called her Aunty.

The smell of pancakes teased her. Her heart was pounding, and she looked down at Denier. “That is a shocking way to start the day.”

He licked his muzzle. “She is making the pancakes; you have the syrup. You get sweeter every time.”

Brit snorted. “I don’t want to miss breakfast.”

“We won’t. I can wait until I return tonight.” He rubbed his nose against hers.

“You will be gone all day?”

“I will. I have to carry out an assignment that needs my particular skills.” He stroked her cheek. “I will be with you as soon as the paperwork is done.”

“You have to do paperwork?”

“Documentation for a contract death. We do do our taxes, after all.”

She blinked and laughed. “Right. Shower and dressed, then pancakes.”

“Done.” He lifted her and carried her into the bathroom, where she learned what all the handgrips were for.

Brit was blushing when they joined Litha in the kitchen. Pancakes were still steaming, and Denier’s stack of pancakes was twice as high with a huge stack of bacon. Brit’s had bacon and fruit. Honey and syrup were sitting between the plates.

Brit grinned. “Thanks, Litha. Everything looks so clean.”

She snagged her plate and the syrup and headed for the dining table in the corner.
