He cocked his head, and Brit smiled. He asked, “If I looked you up, would it show up on a news report?”

“Yeah, but it was a while ago. I am older than I look.”

Brit looked at her, and she looked barely legal. “How long have you been a researcher?”

“In various industries, about fifteen years, a prima ballerina for five years before that.”

Denier was looking at her. “You have aged well.”

“If you keep glass on the shelf, it remains pristine.” She smiled. “A star that burned brightly a million years ago still throws a brilliant light.”

Brit smiled. “I wish I look half as good at your age.”

Litha shrugged. “You have a different path. There will be a ton of family in your life. That leaves a joyful mark.”

Denier grinned slowly. “You are a precog?”

“Oh, gods no. But I can see heat signatures, and certain bits of her are glowing like a furnace. That indicates that when her body is ready, children will follow.”

Brit saw Litha’s quick wink when she sipped at her coffee.

Brit froze. That wink told her what she had been wondering. Well, that explained the intense longing for the nest, as Denier described it. “Okay, so when are we shopping?”

Litha checked the time. “Stores open in ten minutes, and the car is on the way. We will be on the way as soon as you finish breakfast and have shoes on.”

Denier tapped on his com. “You have been sent funds for your excursion. Buy whatever you need, want, or have any attraction toward.”

Litha chuckled and blurred, leaving a column of warm air in her wake. She returned a few seconds later. “I have taken measurements, and I saw a shop with pillar beds.”

Denier perked up. He obviously knew what they were.

Brit sighed. “You will have to show me.”

“I will. And you can decide on a theme. Some folks want colour; some want texture.”

“Is it complicated?”

Litha shook her head. “It is very basic. It is literally instinct.”

Litha was wearing a pretty sundress, but the fabric had a certain sheen.

Brit asked, “Is that fireproof?”

“Mostly. I can get hot enough to take out any invasive personnel and not scorch my hem.”

Brit looked at the silk dress that was wrapped around her. “Is this okay?”

“It’s good. Get some shoes.”

“Oh, right.”

Denier smiled. “I will get them.”

He melded into shadows in the kitchen and returned thirty seconds later.

He knelt in front of Brit and slipped her shoes on.

Brit blushed, and Litha smiled with her head cocked. “The car is here.”

Brit looked to Denier. His gleaming hide looked lovely in the light streaming through the windows. She wrapped her arms around him. “Have fun at work, and be safe.”

He chuckled. “No one has ever told me that before.”

Brit smiled and booped his nose with her finger. He laughed in startled surprise and leaned back.

They kissed quickly, and Brit went with Litha while Denier dissolved into the shadows. Time to outfit Brit’s nest. The urge was becoming impossible to ignore.
