Chapter Nine

Litha had waffles waiting for them in the morning, and she grinned when they came down ruffled and wearing minimal clothing.

Breakfast sausages were stacked high, and she inclined her head. “Breakfast is ready.”

When they were all sitting at the dining table and the fruit salad was split between Brit and Litha, they gave her a serious look.

“Litha, I know you have only been here a couple of days, but I wanted to know if you want to live here.”

Litha blinked. “That is a very kind offer, but I had to get dispensation for the commute. And leave to come here. I would love a visit, and I can come anytime you need a bodyguard, but I have to continue my research. There are actives appearing all the time who need special textiles for containment or enhancement.”

Litha looked to Denier. “I am guessing that you have called in that you have a pregnant mate.”

“I have.”

“And Etgar and Vallu are willing to shelter her if necessary.”

“They are.”

“Then, I packed my bag appropriately.” She smiled. “I will pull my guardian plasma in and do let any parties interested that I will be back if someone gives Brit a hangnail, and I will burn their entire clan, group, or family to the ground in seconds. Down to the last child.”

Denier nodded. “I will tell Etgar to spread the word.”

Brit chuckled. “Well, the guys from yesterday can’t do it.”

Litha smiled. She had shed her tears over the lives lost. Well, as much as she could. She didn’t actually cry. Everything evaporated.

She looked at her com and made herself available to the one person who could take her out on dates. It would be weeks before she got another date if that. She was exclusive to him, but he wasn’t exclusive to her.

She continued eating her waffles and finished everything on her plate.

Denier and Brit were feeding each other, which was cute, but another thing she couldn’t do with just anyone. Litha took her plate to the kitchen and moved her hand over it, sterilizing it faster than any autoclave.

She put the dish away, then the cutlery. Brit had a huge empty house, but the Daycrosses would be able to help outfit it with staff.

She felt her com buzz and checked it. She had a date. She sighed. The romantic dates were cute, but she wanted more. More was not what her patron wanted.

She grabbed her bag from the corner of the kitchen where she had stashed it and got ready to leave. “Well, it has been interesting. Congratulations on your union, and good luck with the pregnancy. Both of you.”

Brit blinked. “So soon?”

“It is better that I leave now before you get attached and want to keep me. Lady Daycross will help you find a housekeeper. I am pretty sure.”

Brit lunged to her feet and hugged her. “I don’t want you to go.”

“That is just the nesting instinct. I am smaller than you, and it is triggering a parent-child response.”

Brit looked down at her. “That isn’t it at all. You didn’t try and change me or make me into something else. You didn’t cop a feel or ogle me. You helped me. Very few people try and help me.”

Litha smiled and stroked her cheek. “Now that you are firmly omega, more will come to your assistance when you need it. So, call on me anytime. I have to head back to Aksalla right now.”

Denier asked, “Why the rush? Do you have a date?”

She paused. “Um. Yes. In four hours. Horseback riding and a picnic.”

He froze. “Oh, I uh... was just making a joke.”

“Yeah, well. I do. So, back home, check in at the office, and get ready for the date in boring riding gear. No idea what the picnic will be, but I am practised enough at it that I can manage to eat food that I can’t see.”
