Denier blinked. “You wear the mask?”

“Of course. I have no idea who my patron is, and that is how it is supposed to be.”

Brit was still holding her and cuddling up to her. “Brit, are you cuddling to me for warmth?”

Brit sighed. “Yes. Despite being petite, you are soft and curvy in all the right places.”

“Nice to know. My primary appeal is literally as a bed warmer. I should probably cancel the date. I don’t think he would miss it. He can just go to one of the other escorts he frequents.”

Brit blinked. “He asks for others?”

“Yeah, he has told me as much.” Litha stepped back and looked at her wrist.

Brit’s com blinked, and she answered with a smile. “Hey, mix. What’s up?”

“Tell Miss Litha to keep the date. Please.”

Litha blinked. “Precog?”

Brit nodded. “What happens if she doesn’t keep the date?”

“People die. A busload of people die.”

Litha paused with her finger over the cancellation icon. “Then, I had best go on that picnic.”

The young voice said, “Thank you, Miss.”

“You are welcome. And now I guess I should collect my things and get home. Denier, you are in charge of security now.”

He didn’t laugh. He nodded formally.

“Good, and if anything happens to Brit, I am going to start burning your appendages off one by one, and since I can count to twenty-one, you should be nervous.” She smiled.

He nodded calmly again. “I will take care of her.”

Litha nodded, hoisted her bag, and left. She gathered her plasma balls but left a heat shield over the house. She would know if anyone came in via a non-conventional route.

She didn’t have time to leave via the ferry, so she flew above the house and over the open water, heading for Aksalla. It was time to go do what she was paid for.

Moving as fast as thermal propulsion could carry her, she headed home.

Morning sickness struck after breakfast, and Denier held her hair while Vallu offered to send over a doctor since she wasn’t allowed to heal Brit herself. Nothing was going to drain any power from Mrs. Daycross while she was carrying.

Khytten spoke. “Baola says you are sick.”

Her voice was a croak as she lay with her head on Denier’s lap. “Yup.”

“Drink the vial with the blue cap. Litha said she was putting it in your freezer. Warm the vial up in water to thaw it and then drink it.”

“It won’t make the pregnancy go faster?”

“It might take it forward a few weeks and lodge you near the end of your first trimester, but you won’t be sick anymore.”

Brit thought about feeling this way for another week. “We are heading to the kitchen.”

Denier chuckled. “Thank you, Madame.”
