“Do you fit into that bracket too?”

“God, no. I like people who are in touch with their feelings and acknowledge them.”

“I know we’re still getting to know each other, but I really hope you’ll give me a chance.”

She smiled. “I’m here, aren’t I? I don’t know what this is, but I like the way you look at me and the way I feel when I’m with you.”

As Oleander spoke, explaining her thoughts and her mind, Jackson realized she knew exactly what he felt for her. But instead of using that to her advantage and taking him for a ride, she was making him aware he was too much of an open book. Strangely, she seemed to like that about him.

“I don’t have to pretend with you, Jackson, and that’s a big deal. I’m always putting on a show for people,” Oleander explained, smoothing her dress over her thighs. “I don’t trust easily, but I project my hard shell, because it’s easier than letting people into my life. And with you, I find myself doing that a lot less.”

Nodding, Jackson smiled. “You said you like the way I look at you. How do I look at you?”

“Like you’ve seen a rainbow after days of darkness.”

“Youarea rainbow, Oleander. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.”

Their conversation kept changing topics, but Oleander did most of the talking and Jackson discovered that he was okay with it. The sound of her voice was so soothing as she gave him a full education on her obsession with action movies.

They even talked aboutStar Warsand whether or not it was important to watch it in chronological order or in the machete order—machete won, obviously. He’d never dated a woman who even knew the basics ofStar Wars, let alone anything about the machete order. Oleander surprised him at every turn.

The best part was that everything about them fit—from the food they liked, to the size of their hands and the fit of their mouths, to the way her curves molded against his straight lines perfectly.

It had been so long since he’d been with someone who didn’t expect him to be everything at once, it felt good to behimselfwithout all the weight of being perfect all the time.
