A date? When last did I go on an actual date? Thinking about it, Hudson and I haven’t ever been on an “official” date.

Sure,I text back.

My phone pings again in seconds.

Okay. I’ll pick you up at 9. Wear something casual… —H

I feel slightly excited for a normal date night ahead, so I push the mysterious phone call to the back of my mind. It’s probably nothing.

I can bang my head against the wall to try and figure out the cryptic calls, when all it is, is just some obsessed ex that wants to get a rise out of me.

Fuck her.

Taking a deep breath, I go back to my work and read through each manuscript carefully I’m really enjoying the historical romance book so I forward it to Rose, hoping she’ll see why I chose it.

It’s 6:15 p.m. when I’m finally done with both manuscripts and everyone else around me is already packing up and ready to leave.

I look up from my computer screen to see Rose with her black purse heading toward me.

“Good call on that historical romance,” she says with a wide smile. “I loved it. It’s fresh and different.”

“Thanks,” I tell her. “I felt like the protagonist had a strong voice throughout the first few chapters that I looked over even though the romantic male figure was so cruel.”

Rose nods, looking very pleased. “You have great eyes. That’s exactly what we look for at Gulliver.”

“Ladies, I’m sorry to interrupt but we’re going out for drinks in SoHo, do you two want to join us?” June asks, with two other girls standing behind her.

They’re both beautiful. The honey blonde girl is Vera and the brunette is Amber, but I’m not too sure of their names.

“I’d love to. I need a nice drink after today.” Rose turns to me. “Are you joining us, Parker? It would be nice for you to get acquainted and make more friends. We’d love to properly welcome you into Gulliver Books.”

“I would love to join you guys,” I say sheepishly. “But I am already booked for a date later on.”

Rose smiles. “It’s fine, we can treat you to lunch this weekend if you’re free.”

“Thank you so much.”

“You’re welcome,” June whispers. “I hope the date is worth it.” She winks at me before leaving with the rest of the group.

I pack my bags and head home, feeling eager for the evening ahead.
